Some states like Katsina and Zamfara are currently applying the Islamic Sharia laws while others are also yet to. Most of the penalties that are awarded to suspected criminals based on these laws like chopping off of hands and feet, stoning among others have been criticized globally to depict gross violation of human rights.
What even makes the situation worse is the fact that quite a number of politician from the Northern part of Nigeria have supported the Sharia movement in various ways. As a result of this, there is a constitutional mess that is already brewing up since the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the existence of a secular state that offers freedom of religion to all citizens.
The state of plateau in Nigeria has got the highest number of internally displaced persons as a result of conflict between Christians and Muslims. The area is predominantly occupied by the Christian Tarok farmers who consider the Muslim Hausa cattle herders as intruders. The Muslim Hausa are accused by the Chriustian Tarok of being cattle rustlers who are planning to usurp political power. As a result of this, 72 villages were burned down in 2002 and 2003. More than 1,000 people were killed in clashes that broke out between Christians and Muslims. In fact, even to date, there is still no peace in the area.On 18th May 2004, the then President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Plateau State that is in Central Nigeria. The reason was the massacre of Muslims by Christians in the area. This in turn led to revenge attacks on Christians in Northern Nigeriaâ€™s largest city, Kano. This same trend continues to date despite efforts by sections of leaders to end the conflicts between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.
