English Essays on The Communication Impact of Mobile Phones

Today’s digital era is characterized by a great array of technology advancements that have simplified people’s way of living. Unlike the ancient days when humans had to perform a myriad of tasks manually, the current times are filled with automated machines and devices that have eroded the traditional manual way of performing tasks. The unprecedented rates of technology change and mobility have resulted in an increasingly borderless world. One of the factors that have greatly evolved with the advent of new technology is communication. Indeed, communication is a key aspect of human interaction. During the heydays, people utilized different traditional methods of communication such as; blowing horns, beating drums and using smoke and fire as communication signals. However, amid the fast-paced advancement in technology, the method of communication has significantly transformed.  Today, people communicate with one another via emails, faxes, mobile phones, video conferences, video chat rooms and social media channels. The world is currently recognized as a global village due to technology developments that have made communication between different parties easy and effective. In light of the progressive state of technology advancements, the worldwide economic status has significantly grown. Essentially, it is because communication has been utilized as a fundamental tool for trade and for performing other vital business operations.

The society has been saturated by a wide range of technologies that surround and constitute us.

Cell phones are one of the most common devices of communications used by a wide variety of people. . Mobile phones are devices that are classed as information and communication technologies (Katz 2). Unlike the ancient days where communication had always been materially embedded and mediated, mobile phones offer a new and progressive technique. Mobile phones have become ubiquitous as the number of subscribers continues to grow exponentially. The use of mobile phone has gained unexpected popularity because the device presents a great array of features.  Mobile phones are not only limited to voice calls. Instead, they also fulfill a variety of functions, which include; use of the Internet, email and texting services. Additionally, the portability feature of a mobile phone is a crucial aspect that has hit the wave of communication. They are small enough to fit in a purse or pocket which makes it ideal for many people to carry it from place to place. In case of an emergency, a mobile phone can save a life through communication. Communication is more efficient through the use of mobile phones (kyung et al. 1258). The portability aspect of mobile phones has allowed a man to communicate with the other party at any time and within any part of the world. This is because mobile phone communication utilizes a set of networks and sound waves that transmit one’s voice from one location to the recipient who would be in another different location. The present digital era has also displayed the increasing need for the use of the Internet in workplaces, homes, schools, research centers among many other avenues. The rapid technological changes have resulted in the evolution of mobile phones to the current smartphones which allow the user to access the Internet freely. Today, one can be able to get access to massive information by using the Internet and Internet search engines on the smart mobile phones. The social aspect of life has also been greatly revolutionized due to the creation of social media sites (Wood et al. 17).  The world is today recognized as a global village as people are virtually brought closer via plenty of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Furthermore, the invention of mobile phones has facilitated business to take place using new techniques initiated by a series of advanced technologies. For instance, a business meeting may be set up to include people from different parts around the world who need not to travel to be physically located in the meeting venue. This has been made possible by use of vital communication technologies such as; conference calls, Skype and video call (kyung et al. 1259).  The advancement in communication technology has contributed to the rapid global economic growth that has led to the general improvement in the standard of living.

Communication has improved immensely after the innovation of mobile phones. Unlike the past where phones were traditionally connected to land lines, recent mobile phone devices are said to function under networks (Clemens 8). During the ancient days, the use of telephones was faced with a lot of limitations and daunting challenges. A vast majority of people worldwide could not afford to own telephones. Therefore, communication was limited to a few people who were considered to be wealthy. Additionally, the use of telephones was more common in workplaces and business platforms. The inability of telephones being carried from one place to another made it impossible for people to communicate at any time within any location.  It was thereby eminently difficult for people to convey information that required an urgent response. For example, one could not be able to convey information effectively to the needed party in cases of emergencies that would normally occur in the form of; accidents, natural disasters or fire outbreaks. The alarming number of deaths and havocs that could have otherwise been avoided if there had been a quick response can be attributed to lack of effective communication devices during the ancient times. The use of telephones as tools for communication would also be hindered by poor weather and climatic conditions. During bad weather, most telephone lines would go off or not function properly thereby resulting in an ineffective and inefficient communication. However, the innovation of mobile phones has eroded away the traditional use of telephone lines as a fundamental feature that resulted in communication. Mobile phones have been developed to work under satellite and broadband transmissions thereby resulting to an effective and clearer communication between the caller and the recipient (Clemens 56).

The society can be able to access information on matters concerning the general welfare of not only the nation but the world at large. The media houses have facilitated the faster spread of relevant and important information through social media sites. People can, therefore, news alerts while using smart mobile phones. A lot of people in poverty-ridden regions are unable to purchase televisions and radios. Due to the affordability and availability of mobile phones, poor people are today able to access news alerts among another important information readily. Since information is power, most people who get news alert via their mobile phones can avoid compromising or life-threatening environments. Also, people can keep up with the changing trends in society, politics, and the economy.

Aside from the mobile phones, the recent series of communication systems are characterized by a certain degree of interactivity. Interactivity is the capability of new communication systems to “talk back” to the user, almost like an individual participating in a conversation (Holmes 14). Interactive communication systems are more effective, accurate and satisfying to the communicating participants. In today’s global marketplace, businesses are continually faced with the need to change their structures to attain a competitive advantage. Implementing the new technology and information management systems will result in inevitable changes that in turn positively impact the business world. For instance, the innovation of different forms of social media sites and websites has enabled most business organizations to develop direct communication channel with their customers. Concurrently, this has allowed the businesses to analyze the wants and needs of their customers after which they’d determine the market demand. Thus, communication indirectly assists the business management in making crucial decisions with regards to supply and demand of their produced goods or services.

To add to this, the society continues to be molded by the rapid exchange of knowledge that has been made a reality due to the existing advanced media of communication. The cultural distances have reduced because of the dramatic increase in cross-cultural contact that has been facilitated by the readily available Internet and social media sites (Holmes 22). The emergence of a global information infrastructure has opened more opportunities for more multicultural communication in the form of on-line communication. The education sector has improved immensely as students can access learning resources and lectures online. Internet access and availability of computers have allowed students from all walks of life to get an education through distance learning.

The first-world countries have adopted the digital technique of voting for their most preferred leader. This methodology has transformed the political scenery as it has proven to be accurate, fast and effective.  The digital technique of voting is normally synchronized with efficient communication devices that are utilized to send data results from one location to the other accurately. In essence, communication technology has revolutionized the world into a global village in various ways. The use of advanced technological communication devices such as mobile phones has led to a significant improvement in the world’s economy, health sector as well as social affairs. The new communication devices have come in handy in severe situations of natural disasters and accidents. Through communication, many lives have been saved from the cruel jaws of death. Thereby, technology remains to serve as a fundamental tool for effective and efficient communication between and among people from all parts of the world.
