Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs), core determinants of a person’s wellness state, is a diagnostic measure of the degree of functioning of the lungs. It assesses the lung capacity, flow of blood, lung volume, and the gas exchange. The normal functioning of the pulmonary system depends on several factors to maintain the balance of the body. Ventilation, movement of air in and out of the lungs, is the main function of the pulmonary system.
Obstructive conditions caused by medical complications can lead to obstruction of the free movement of air in and out of the lungs. These complications may lead to chronic disease of the lungs, which reduces the flow of air. The conditions are majorly brought by the feeble muscles failing to contract and relax systemically and therefore unable to pump the blood.
Pulmonary Function Test involve a series of components, such as tidal volume (VT), Minute volume (MV), Vital capacity, functional residual capacity (FRC), total lung capacity (TLC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume (FEV), forced expiratory flow (FEF), and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). All these measurements aid in the determination of the PFT. Some of the factors, such as the volume of air inhaled and exhaled are measured by use of an instrument called spirometer, which presents the results on a spirograph.
Each person has different normal PFT values. Comparison between the results obtained from the diagnosed individual and the expected values from a person of the same age, height, race, and sex is done. Consequently, the comparison of the results to the previous results follows. In case of abnormal PFT measurements, the person carries out other diagnostic tests to establish the medical diagnosis.
