Personal Statement Paper on Pharmacy Field
Having grown up and spent half of my life in Cameroon, I have developed an undying passion in helping my fellow citizens. Cameroon is among the third world countries whose per capital income lies below average. As a developing country, Cameroon is yet to reach its potential such as that which has been attained by many other developed countries. It is with this profound reason that a vast majority of the citizens continue to face daunting and exasperating challenges due to extreme levels of poverty. In addition, the mortality rate continues to rapidly rise as many people are still unable to afford healthcare and proper medication. Among the victims who have died due to improper medication is my grandmother. It is with such unfortunate circumstances that I gained the motivation to pursue a degree course in pharmacy with the intent of saving the patient’s lives. I want to serve my nation by being part of the erudite team of pharmacists who work day and night to ensure that drugs are prescribed safely and effectively to patients.
My decision to pursue Pharmacy as a career has also been influenced by my first job as a home-aid care provider in the United States. Working as a home caregiver for a period of 5 years has enlightened me on the myriad of important issues related to good health. This is because of the fact that I constantly have to ensure that the elderly are taken care of well in terms of their wellbeing and health. Through my work experience, I have gained motivation to serve and care for the most vulnerable group of people in the society. More so, I am inspired to assist the citizens who are living in poverty-ridden regions of Cameroon. My satisfaction has always been derived in seeing people healthy and happy. It is with this profound reason that I seek to provide sound health to the unhealthy people in Cameroon; most of whom are unable to access better healthcare and medical services.
During my A-level studies, I realized that I had a greater liking towards physical sciences especially Chemistry and Biology. I particularly loved Chemistry because of the series of Chemistry practical exercises that were assigned to us. Through this, I learned how different elements would react to form stable compounds. I also amassed a lot of knowledge from Organic Chemistry on the aspect of finding an unknown organic molecule after a reaction between chemical compounds such as alcohols and alkenes. Biology as a subject stood out for me as I was able to comprehend factors dealing with human biological systems and how the human body functions. In addition, Biology encompasses other vital topics such as Virology, Bacteriology, and Mycology. All of these topics revolve around microorganisms and how they may cause both positive and negative impacts to man. Through an endless study and research on microorganisms, vaccines, antibiotics and anti-fungicides are continuously discovered as medical solutions to viral, bacterial and fungal diseases respectively.
My role as a home caregiver has essentially helped me to develop excellent communication skills. I believe that I have learned new ways of communicating with the vulnerable people in the community inclusive of the patients and the elderly population. I am more confident that this University is the right place for me to hone my skills and learn more about how to become an erudite and effective Pharmacist for my native country.
