Randall Jerrell, ” The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner.

In the field of poetry, a piece literature can give much more by just a small glimpse of presentation. This is achieved through in-depth and concentration of the style used in poem. When one checks on these skills, usually a clear picture of information is drawn. How the persona perceives issues on a given plot of presentation differs from how a poem is supposed to be read. In the Randall poetry ‘The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner’ much more is revealed and learnt through a thorough interpretation and analysis of the poem.

The Poems’ interpretation and Analysis.

This is a five-line poem which captivates and challenges most readers. This because, the poem is based on very few lines as compared to many poems in poetry work. Additionally, each of the five lines has got a message and figure of speech in it. This is a poem written by a voice of a dead person. The main message in the poem is the aftermath of world war two. For instance, the last line uses certain words that reveal the persona is long dead “When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose”.  Moreover, this poem reveals a negative critic of the effects of the world war. This is shown by use of words like death, the parts of guns remain in the earth surface and nightmares that haunt the persona. In conclusion, one can tell from the poem that the writer of the poem uses his experience of the poem to warn against the war brutality and impacts. This is clear in title “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner” and in lines four and five are all about the horrible process of war, the matter of fact nightmare end to a dream-like experience.

As much as the poem is short, there are a number of figures of speech used in the poetry. These figures of speech include, alliteration, irony and consonance and anaphora.  The use of alliteration is in the second line on the two words  that is “Fur’’ and “Froze”. These words produce almost similar sounds in the same line. The alliteration is used here as figure of speech to give rhythm. The is use of end rhythm and full rhythms. On the other hand, the use of anaphora is evident where the starting lines in this poem begin with “I”. The anaphora gives personal conviction the persona is facing in his experience. Additionally, the use irony is depicted in the poem. This is evident when a dead person speaks and talks of the past events and he is dead. The use consonance is brought out in lines Black flack in line four. This has been used to show emphasis the persona information to the readers.  Finally, the use of paradox is encountered. In the second line, I fell…I hunched…. I woke…. I died. This is to express life in a strange, paradoxical way, as if the individual concerned was merely part of some impersonal process, a mother’s son born to be a victim. Therefore, it is clear that a small piece of poetry can reveal a lot of information. This information is based on themes, periods and world events. In this poem one has to take keen note on the lines rather than the title only.
