Installing a fire sprinkler is worth every investment a person resolves to execute. Fire sprinklers are devices that discharge water to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading in the room. They are installed in schools, hospitals, social halls, and business premises for safety roles. Efficiency of these sprinkler devices depends majorly on the coverage area and its working condition. Size of the building being protected from fire should be taken into consideration to establish an exact figure of the number of fire sprinklers to be installed.  Fire sprinklers have played a key role in home fire safety for over 100 years in the United States of America. In some part of the US such as Texas, any new home must install fire sprinklers (Baldwin & North, 1973). These devices have proven to be very effective in managing and reducing adverse accidents in the events of the fire. Water sprinklers come in different forms,that is, they can be a wet pipe or dry pipe though they serve the same purpose. The wet pipe sprinklers contains pipes holding water which are discharged when they are activated. On the other hand, dry pipe sprinkler has a plumbing system that contains air or nitrogen which pass through the sprinkler head before the water is released.

Regardless of the sprinkler installed, they all play some critical role in a specified building.. Furthermore, As long as the fire sprinkler is operational, many lives is saved in the event of fire outbreak. Also, a facility which has installed a fire sprinkler experience smaller property damage and minimal loses as compared to those building without the similar system . Besides, fire sprinklers are the best form of defense to individual trapped in a fire as it allows them to escape to safer points. To be more efficient, fire sprinklers should be fitted with detection sensors that help the occupants to know when the sprinkler is discharging. As stressed by Melinek (1993),fire sprinklers are hence vital in every building to foreclose deaths and loses related to fire.

The controversy surrounding fire sprinklers

Several states have looked upon enacting a law that obligates individuals to set up fire sprinklers in their new home or buildings. These states have not fully implemented this vital law because they fail to stress the importance of doing it. Many people disregard these fire safety measure because they lack information about it. Having an idea of the pros and con of installing fire sprinklers will enable one to make an informed decision of installing the fire safety sprinklers in their building. Through these arguments, one can weigh between the benefits and the disadvantages associated with the fire sprinklers.

Pro Side of the Controversy

The fire sprinklers play a crucial role in saving the lives of the family members trapped in a fire scene. It minimizes the rate at which fire spreads in the affected area. A research done by Fleming (1992), indicates that, 2,620 people perished and 12,925 others were seriously injured in home fires. The US fire protection agencies stated that these casualties could be minimized by installing fire sprinklers in the homesteads. Sprinklers are fitted with fire sensors where they get activated in case of a fire outbreak.  As elaborated by Melinek (1993), these devices are capable of extinguishing the fire or minimizing it from spreading. They ,therefore, save lives by allowing more time for the victims to escape the scene and seek refuge in a safer point. No amount of price or critique can outdo these life-saving devices.

Moreover, installing fire sprinklers can significantly reduce the cost of the home insurance policy. Fire sprinklers are expensive to fix, but the cost can be recovered from the low cost of the insurance. In the US, it is approximated that the price of the insurance policy of a house with a fire sprinkler is five percent lower than the house which has not installed the system (Gupta, 2001). Furthermore, frequent servicing and maintenance of these devices will enable them to stay longer and the more you one enjot the benefits for an extended time.

Con side of the controversy

The People who doubt the work  and the need to install fire sprinklers in their home cite the cost of installing them and maintenance of the device. According to Suchomel (1965) installation and purchasing of the fire, sprinklers is costly. National Construction Estimator approximates the monetary value of setting up fire sprinklers in a building to be $3.70 per square meter. In a situation where one is refurbishing his home and intends to install the device, it will be more expensive especially when faced by financial constraints. These fire sprinklers also demand frequent maintenance and inspection. Some parts such as head may need to be replaced due to rust or be cleaned to remove other dirt. The whole process is costly since it seeks the service of the professional. Prohibitive cost reduces the desire to install fire sprinklers in homes.

Tentative Thesis Statement

Fire sprinklers should be installed in the homes and business premises to reduce the loss of lives and adverse damage associated with a fire outbreak. Every state should advocate for laws that make it compulsory to install fire sprinklers in the new buildings to heighten safety.
