Sample Communications Paper on Media Literacy

Media Literacy

Summary of My Media Usage

Media is one of the greatest technologies of the modern era given its role in enhancing communication among people. Personally, I have gradually developed an interest in media, and I use several media devices for communication purposes as well as receiving information of what happens around the world on a day-to-day basis. Currently, I use my mobile phone frequently since it allows access to the Internet, which remains a key technological component. In addition to accessing the Internet, I always communicate with friends and family through short messages and direct calls whenever I have the time and money to do so. The television is also one of my most-treasured media devices as it gives me the opportunity to watch latest movies and music videos. I believe that the television has played a key role in changing my current lifestyle.

Personal Goals for Tuning in To Messages

As already mentioned, the mobile phone is one of my most-treasured media devices. For communication with friends and families, I rely primarily on my smartphone. One of my personal goals for tuning in to the messages I receive is to create a strong relationship with those who communicate with me frequently. Also, by tuning in to messages I currently receive, my goal is to portray myself as a person who is interested in knowing the whereabouts of others.

My Interpretation of Messages

I can confirm that I actively respond to and interpret messages I receive on my phone. I often take time to digest and understand what the messages are about before responding to them. However, I prefer an automatic response at times, especially when held up in meetings or other official duties. The benefit of actively interpreting and responding to messages is that it allows me to effectively express my opinions and ideas. Also, it provides a one-on-one opportunity for interaction with another person.

Access to Same Channels for Same Types of Content

I prefer to access the same channel for the same types of content. I believe that accessing the same channel is easier as compared to switching from one channel to another. For example, during my free time, I watch animal documentaries. Of course, channels about animal documentaries also slot time for news and other important information. Therefore, I am always sorted through watching the same channel.

Broadening Media Exposure

People often dream of broadening their media exposures at some point in their lives, and I have not been left behind in this. I do this on several occasions when I have to read through various articles on the Internet and physically go through the same information on daily newspapers and magazines. For instance, yesterday, after paying for access to an online newspaper, I had to purchase two other newspapers in one of my preferred retail shops.

Whether My Behaviors Match My Beliefs

My behaviors tend to match my beliefs rather than what advertisers want me to believe in or embrace. For instance, I believe that spending a lot of time watching television is not good for one’s development. This has seen me reduce the time I spend watching television despite campaigns pushing people to watch certain programs on television. I believe that every person should act based on their beliefs rather than the views, perceptions, or beliefs of those around them.

Low-level versus High-Level Media Literacy

High-level media literacy gives insight into a situation where one can access, analyze, evaluate, and understand the complex information conveyed through the media. An example is when one engages in debates through television and social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook (Kleemans & Eggink, 2016). High-level media literacy is common among people with high education levels (Kleemans & Eggink, 2016). With high-level media literacy, a person can express their diverse opinion through dialogue and questioning ideas of others.  On the other hand, low-level media literacy refers to the ability to decode simple and basic tasks such as typing on a computer or operating a television. Low-level media literacy is common among the least educated in society since most of them lack an interest in the political and economic debates shaping the country.

Importance of Gaining Control Over the Media

It is important to gain additional control over the media one is exposed to avoid the negative influences of the media and brainwashing (Silverblatt, 2016). Although the media is a good tool that may be used to pass information to the masses, it can also be disastrous. Several fast food restaurants advertise junk food to gain profits despite their adverse impacts on health such as causing obesity. Moreover, the civil wars and incessant political conflicts in various countries are as a result of political incitement fueled by the media. Thus, gaining control over the media would be crucial when it comes to mitigating the mentioned adverse effects.

Significance and Impact of Media Literacy on Society

An impact of media literacy is that it has helped improve information conveyance and distribution as well as improved public awareness of the issues emerging in the world (Silverblatt, 2016). The society has also become more critical and outspoken on issues as they are aware of how the issues affect them. People are also actively interacting with the global world through the internet and social networks. The result is that media literacy has created a platform in which people make informed choices while protecting themselves and their families from harmful content.
