Sample Cultural Studies Paper on Cultural Competence in Healthcare

Cultural competence is the capability of an organization to give its services effectively and meet the linguistic, social, and cultural needs of its customers. According to Buchbinder, Shanks, & Kite (2019), cultural competence in healthcare produces several benefits to the community, patients, and healthcare organizations, which include increased trust between health providers and patients, reduced medical errors, thus reducing cost and increase the market share of the healthcare organization. To include all the community members is important for the growth of healthcare organizations and good relations with all community members.

As a healthcare professional, the first step towards improving cultural competence is to perform research on the cultural groups that exist in the community. The data collected should include ethnicity, religion, race, languages, data on access to healthcare services, and their satisfaction with services provided earlier (Buchbinder, Shanks, & Kite, 2016). Such data will allow the organization to cater to all people in the community.

It is essential to identify barriers that are likely to occur while working with a diverse culture. Many races and ethnicities have their traditions, which might make it difficult to establish a strong culture competence (Dauvrin & Lorant, 2015). However, by acknowledging these barriers, new strategies are developed to mitigate them.

Educating all staff members on handling different cultures is crucial in enhancing cultural competence. A staff member is in daily contact with the patients (Repo et al., 2017). Therefore, by training staff members, their patients holding capabilities are improved, thus improving service delivery.

It is vital to employ competent people from the community. Patients are comfortable expressing themselves to one of their own (Dauvrin & Lorant, 2015). Therefore by hiring individuals from the community not only improves the diversity of the organization but also allows these individuals to teach each other about their culture.

It is important to establish the resources required to enhance cultural competence. Educational programs, research carried out, and employees recruited in the company require funding (Shen, 2015). Therefore, it is essential to develop a working budget that will bring culture competence in the organization.
