In many occasions, people with disabilities have been discriminated against by people around them in homes, schools, and workplaces. They are deprived their rights to education, participate in community activities including sports, rights to vote, to be employed, freedom of movement, and social protection. They barely enjoy equal human rights as other people in the society. As a result, most of the people with exceptionalities are encompassed by poverty, physical and mental challenges due to harassments, and poor health. Discriminatory acts against people with disabilities have been profound until recently, when advocates in governmental as well non-governmental organizations proposed the implementation of inclusion of people with disabilities in schools, community activities, and workplaces. The inclusion promotes equality in all aspects through curbing discrimination. Therefore, inclusion protects the rights of individuals with disabilities.
In my opinion students with disabilities are included by teachers and other students without disabilities to promote equality in schools. The inclusion helps students with disabilities by boosting their self-esteem and identity through socializing with other children on daily basis. Equally the students with disabilities are able to contribute their ideas in classroom discussions just like other normal students. They are given equal chances to participate in school social activities like sports, symposiums, and debates. In addition, the students with disabilities are able to identify and nurture their talents accordingly with the support of fellow students and teachers. Students without disabilities associate with students with exceptionalities normally, without discrimination nor harassment, since all students receive equal treatment from their teachers, who are trained to promote equality and meet all students’ needs regardless of their abilities. As a result of inclusion, all students access quality education, improve their social interactions as well as relationships, feel protected and have a sense of belonging, in addition to a stable mental health.
I equally find inclusion of people with disabilities at work places important, since it promotes equality among workers regardless of their abilities. Inclusion provides equal recruitment and employment chances to everyone according to their qualifications and expertise. Every employee, with or without disability, participates wholly in the organization’s trainings and events without discrimination. Moreover wages, allowances, and compensations are received fairly by each employee according to their contract agreements or performance. Non-discriminative employment reduces poverty especially among the people with disabilities, since most of them are usually denied employment, or paid wages unfairly, thus they end up in poverty.
With inclusion, organizations facilitates movement and access to all organization’s premises by each employee. For instance, many organizations have created trails that enables wheelchair movements around the building. Therefore, according to me, inclusion of individuals with disabilities in workplaces is important for employee’s satisfaction. The fair treatment in work places and schools to people with disabilities is equally applied in neighborhood activities. Community members support people with disabilities in their movement through modifications of transportation systems, help them access quality medication services, as well as engaging them in community social activities like sports, religious matters, and farewell concerns.
People with disabilities are subject to discrimination in the society, however their inclusion in setups like schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods has greatly promoted equality and protection of human rights. People with disabilities are able to engage fully in social activities and enjoy equal treatment similar to that of people without disabilities in institutions. Similarly they receive fair treatment and support from people around them. Inclusion of individuals with disabilities promotes equality, social interactions, eradicates poverty, dispels discriminative attitudes, and protects human rights of each member of the community.
