Sample Education Paper on The Concept of Reflexivity

The concept of reflexivity is significantly associated with different types of qualitative research. Scholars conducting the mentioned studies undergo a more sophisticated process known as reflexivity that compels them to reflect on their interpretations and whether or not they are objective (Saunders and Thornhill, 2019). Palaganas et al. (2017) argue that most scholars using qualitative methods have significant contact with the research subjects compared to the ones conducting quantitative studies. Reflectivity is an integral process in qualitative studies because it allows scholars to comprehend the way the study affects them and acknowledge their impact on the research process and results (Saunders and Thornhill, 2019). The subjectiveness of qualitative research methodologies makes reflexivity vital because it allows individuals to obtain credible results by diminishing the risks of bias among researchers (Yu and Zellmer-Bruhn, 2019.). Hence, researchers should hone the skill of reflexivity to effusively examine and comprehend their research philosophies, question their actions and thoughts, and acquire the ability to scrutinize personal beliefs the same way they do to those of others. To what extent does one’s ability to define the intersecting contextual associations between research subjects and themselves heighten the credibility of findings and one’s understanding of the research?

Scholars face some significant challenges when they adopt a reflexive approach. Firstly, reflexivity may compel researchers to experience emotional flooding and undergo self-doubt as a result of questioning their suppositions (Probst, 2015). Secondly, it may also impede individuals from completing their studies on time because it takes significant time to analyze and understand reflexive insight (Morrison, 2015). Finally, reflexivity may also undermine the trustworthiness of scholars with tenure committees employing quantitative research methodology and force the latter to remove credible articles from their portfolio due to their perceived lack of (Probst, 2015). Hence, reflexivity results in some personal, project-related, and systematic challenges. Do the drawbacks of the reflexive approach surpass its benefits? If so, is it advisable for one to engage in reflexivity while conducting qualitative research?
