Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a nutritional disorder of the spine (Marshall 806). It is a condition that causes muscles in the human body to be weak. This makes the body prone to sprains, fractures, and other diseases caused by weakness of the bones. The human bones are living tissues and are replaced by the body once they are worn out. Osteoporosis occurs when the rate at which bone tissues are replaced is slower than the rate at which they are destroyed, therefore, causing weak bones. Despite the belief among a number of people that osteoporosis is an old man’s disease, there are cases in which the condition has been suffered by younger people.

There are a number of factors that cause this disease. These include lack of calcium in the body. Calcium supports the strengthening of bones in the body. In addition, lack of vitamin D can lead to weak bones and cause osteoporosis. There are a number of risk factors associated with osteoporosis. They increase the possibility of getting the disease, and include personal history of fractures as a child, family history of cancer, the higher number of people who have had bone fractures in a family, decrease in body weight, smoking, and gender; females are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis. Other risk factors include estrogen deficiency and low calcium intake.

The treatment of osteoporosis is based on elimination of factors that cause it. To treat this disease, therefore, one should increase the amount of calcium and vitamin D intake. These two substances work well in the body to ensure that the bones stay strong and healthy. They also increase the rate at which destroyed bone tissues are replaced, thereby eliminating the chances of osteoporosis. The treatment is focused on stopping mineral loss, raising the mass of the bones, avoiding bone breakage since this condition leads to a fracture cascade in that the affected will have one fracture after another within short periods of time, and controlling the pain linked with the ailment.

Prevention is better than cure, and it is easier to prevent osteoporosis from attacking a person than treating it. The best way of preventing osteoporosis is by avoiding the risk factors as well as maintaining a high intake of calcium and vitamin D. These risk factors increase the chances of a person suffering from the disease. They weaken the body’s immune system and reduce the rate at which various functions of the body are carried out. This results in a weakened body system prone to diseases and illnesses.

It has also been proven through studies that working out regularly can lessen the number of fractures associated with this condition (Riva 195). Exercises that need the muscles to pull on the bones results in the bones maintaining their density. At times, these exercises also lead to the bones acquiring more density. Exercises that are recommended to increase bone density and to prevent the likelihood of fractures include walking, lifting weights, trotting, using rowing machinery, and riding stationery bicycles. Exercising at times may prove to be dangerous, especially in the presence of a risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, it is wise for a person to take utmost care when exercising to avoid injury, and to seek medical advice before beginning any exercises. These should not be ignored, as prevention is better than cure.
