Sikhism View on Creation

Sikhism is based on the idea of the ‘Oneness of Creation.’ Sikhs believe that the universe was made by Waheguru (God) who solely created the earth and all forms that are found in it. Before the creation, there was no earth, no sky and no life. Only Waheguru existed until he decided to create the world.  ‘’ (Before the creation of the world) for endless eons, there was only utter darkness. There was no earth or sky; there was only the infinite Command of His Hukam. There was no day or night, no moon on sun; Vaheguru sat in primal, in profound undisturbed meditation.’’ (Ang 1035)

According to the teachings of Sikhism, the universe did not come into existence by itself; it is Waheguru who created it. ‘’From the True Lord came the air, and from the air came water. From water, He created the three worlds; in each and every heart He has infused His Light. The Immaculate Lord does not become polluted. Attuned to the Shabad, honor is obtained.’’ (Ang 19)

According to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee, creation was manifested from the Sunn (void) in which the creator, Waheguru eternally existed. The teachings of Sikhism assert that Waheguru is in charge of all life and without his Hukam (will) nothing can be in existence, undergo change or development. Since He created the world, Waheguru has cared for it; he looks after it and protects every aspect of it. Waheguru is the one in charge and causes the birth, life and death of everything. There is no single aspect of the earth which Waheguru does not care for. Sikhism is of the belief that all creatures lead their lives under the rule of Waheguru.

Sikhism teaches that only the creator, Waheguru knows the origin of the universe. Guru Nanak in his writings pointed out that God’s creation comprises of a multitude of universes, and that no one knows for certain how or when creation took place. In one of his texts, it is quoted that, ‘’what was that season, and what was that month, when the universe was created. The Pandits, the religious scholars, cannot find that time, even if is written in the Puraanas.’’ In SGGS/4 It is written that, ‘’The Creator who created this creation-only himself knows.’’

The teachings of Sikhism further elaborate that God, Waheguru is fearless, unseen, self existent and has no destiny written on his forehead. He reveals Himself through His wondrous creative power that is manifested to the whole world. Fundamentally, one needs to understand and accept that humans cannot understand the limits of God’s creative power, His creation and wonder.  In Ang 275, it is written that, ‘’O Nanak, the Creator alone knows the workings of His creation.’’

Sikhs can only be able to understand the creation of the world that is very scientific and matches the views of contemporary scientists through Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
