Global Climate Change

Over the past several decades, global climate change has been a topic of great concern among scientific researchers and world leaders. The significant global climatic change has resulted to grave side effects to every living organism residing on earth. Biodiversity is continually being transformed by the ever-changing climatic conditions. According to various scientific research studies, human beings were found to be the key contributors to climatic change. Human activities serve as driving forces that cause global climatic change.

The unprecedented growth of the global population has further exacerbated the global climatic change. The increase of global population from approximately 1.5 billion people two decades ago to approximately 7 billion people by the year 2011 further intensified the rapid change in climate (Haldar 2). Burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and unprecedented rate of industrialization are some of the human activities that have had a tremendous effect on the climate. The advent of technology which led to a plethora of automobile devices that utilize fossil fuel as their energy source has further worsened the global climatic status. Human activities, commonly referred to as anthropogenic factors, have had a grave effect on the climate due to the dramatic increase of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere (Ward 9).

Greenhouse gases such as Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen oxides, chlorofluorocarbon, ozone, and carbon monoxide have had the greatest effects on the global climate. These gases are radioactively important as they serve as primary determinants of the net heat balance or radiation balance of the earth. Over the past 150 years, human activities have led to an exponential growth in greenhouse gas emissions (Hardy 14). Concurrently, the global population increase has also led to an alarming rise in atmospheric greenhouse gases which has consequently promoted the earth’s warming potential. The significant shoot in the global population is directly related to the severe increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases which has ultimately had an effect on the climate due to global warming.

Global Warming

Climate has changed significantly over the geological timescales. A vast majority of scientists have found discernible evidence on human activities being the major factors attributing to the alarming climatic changes (Haldar 26). The global climatic change is anticipated to escalate to undesirable rates amid the current post-industrialized economy which solely depends on the combustion of coal, oils, and gas. The greenhouse gas effect forms the backbone of the adverse global climatic changes. These gases serve as a figurative thermal blanket that absorbs the earth’s infrared radiation and re-radiates it downwards thereby trapping a significant percentage of heat that would otherwise be radiated into space (Ward 3). Climatic changes are further effected by the escalating global temperatures, popularly referred to as global warming. Global warming continues to be a global problem attributed by human-generated greenhouse gas emissions (Hardy 26). The effect of global warming continues to destabilize biodiversity whilst also negatively having an impact on human’s well-being. Global warming of the earth surface has also resulted to the rising sea levels, changes in the precipitation patterns, and the melting of the ice caps and glaciers. In essence, global warming continues to negatively affect the human health, agriculture, economic activity, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning. Therefore, global warming is largely associated with higher atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations contributed by a plethora of human activities.

The rise in global population is likely to intensify the global climatic changes in ways that have never been witnessed before. It is, therefore, vital for the world to develop a set of policies that would help in mitigating some of the human activities thought to accelerate global warming. Some of the human activities that need to be controlled include; forest clearing, agricultural use of nitrogen fertilizers, solid waste landfilling, burning of fossil fuel among other activities that lead to accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Haldar 10). The government should also develop strict policies that would discourage massive air pollution brought about by industrialization and automobiles. It is evident that industrialization has transformed human lives as they benefit by enjoying the final products manufactured by the industries. In addition, the advent of the automobile technology has revolutionized the transport sector and improved human mobility from one location to another. However, even though industrialization and the automobile technology have improved the standards of living, there still exists a problem. Urban air pollution emanating from industries and automobile devices is a problem that cannot be ignored.

Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas are some of the energy sources that have dominated the post-industrialization era. Combustion of the different fossil fuels does not only result to urban air pollution but also increases the greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere (Hardy 39). Thus, an increase in urban air pollution is directly proportional to an increase in the atmospheric greenhouse gases eventually causing global climatic changes. It is thereby prudent to develop stellar policies that would effectively encourage the use of alternative fuels in place of fossil fuels. The alternative fuels would help in reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere thereby reducing global warming whilst mitigating the effects of global climate change. Some of the best known alternative fuels include biofuel, wind, solar, nuclear, and biomass energy (Ward 65). It is imperative to mitigate the effects of global warming as this would reduce the global climatic changes and protect biodiversity and the ecosystem at large. Besides, reduced climatic changes would help in providing ample conditions for plant growth thereby ensuring that there will be food for the future.
