Sample Geology Paper on The Planets

The ongoing controversies and discussions around what constitutes a planet prompted the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to come up with a functional definition of the term. According to IAU, a planet refers to an object that orbits a star, and it is big to have formed a shape that is round, and cleared neighborhoods around the orbit. However, the recent definition eliminates Pluto from the planets list. Some astronomers strongly opposed the definition.

The reevaluation of planets’ nature has deep historical connections. The Greeks acknowledged seven lights that moved against the patterns of the stars in the sky: the moon, the sun, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. These were what they termed as wanderers or planets. The Earth was not recognized as a planet but rather, it was regarded as the center of the universe. However, Nicolaus Copernicus challenged other astronomers that the sun was at the center and not the Earth. This led to them to reevaluate the definition of planets as objects orbiting around the sun and thus including Earth to the list of planets and deleted moon and sun.

After the discovery of  Pluto, astronomers referred it to “Planet X.” However, they made a discovery that Pluto was small in size in comparison to other planets and their satellites. Pluto has been a distinctive incongruity at the external edge of the terrestrial system for over six decades.

This article is interesting since it is informative about the history of scientific discoveries. I found it quite intriguing that, going be the IAU, Pluto is not one of the planets. I was also amused by the argument that the Earth is the center of the universe. However, I did not like the numerous contradictions by the astronomers on important and even basic concepts as the definition of planet, the position of Pluto or Earth within the universe. These are fundamental issues in astronomy that such scientists should find a consensus before passing such important information to the general public.
