Hope and Optimism

A vast majority of people rely on hope and optimism as their driving force towards attaining future success. While these terms might seem synonymous, they have distinct definitions. Hope is described as the positive expectation for a desired future goal. In this case, the goal needs to be realistic and achievable. Hope is often accompanied by one’s personal efforts towards attaining the set goals. While some have hope towards attaining their set objectives, others are consumed with “blind hope” towards attaining unreasonable and unrealistic goals. The term optimism is described as a personality variable that orients an individual to persevere through adverse situations with the expectation of attaining a positive outcome. Optimists are known to direct all their efforts towards achieving their goals.

Errors

It is almost inevitable for medical practitioners to make an error during their day-to-day operations, but most of these errors are not harmful. Medical statistics reveal that almost 1.5 million Americans are injured annually due to medication errors. Reports also indicate that there were approximately 7,000 fatal medication errors administered to patients during the same period. These errors often occur during the process of prescribing, dispensing, and administering of drugs.

Reaction to errors

A medical practitioner who has committed a medical error is likely to experience emotional distress. This kind of emotional impact can often create a cognitive dissonance in the practitioner. Most physicians would lose confidence in their professional capabilities and their ability to perform a diagnosis and provide effective treatments to the patients. Medical errors elicit a wide range of emotions such as grief, anger, guilt, shock, fear, frustration, and shame. These negative emotions may culminate and affect the physician’s personal life. The physician may thereby experience loss of appetite, poor sleep patterns, and poor levels of concentration. However, the level of emotional reaction depends on the severity of the committed medical error. Female physicians are perceived to undergo more emotional stress than the male physicians.

Romantic Relationships at Work

It is vital for medical practitioners to maintain professionalism while at work. Employees who are in a romantic relationship find it extremely daunting to relate to each other professionally. However, for employees to balance romantic and professional relationship, they have to conduct themselves professionally, avoid taking long lunches together, and treat each other as work colleagues rather than as romantic partners. In addition, it is advisable for employees to adhere to a company’s policies and different cultural norms within the work environment.
