Option 01 Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research

Option 01 this week involves contemplation and comparison of quantitative vs. qualitative scientific research methods as you gather articles for your Week 04 Assignment 02 Literature Review. Please evaluate and attach as PDF (preferred) or weblink of one peer-review research article that utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research, or two articles wherein one uses quantitative and the other qualitative research, which directly relate to your capstone project.

Quantitative methods examine objective theories and relationships among variables within experiment-driven data and is common in large funded studies published in competitive high-tier biomedical journals. Qualitative methods explore deeper meanings behind social behaviors by individuals and/or groups and often attempt to interpret underlying past vs. present philosophies. Quantitative research focuses on analyzing statistical trends, whereas qualitative research attempts to understand sometimes-hidden causes which drive progressive thought processes in various human societies. Both qualitative and quantitative research have limitations as far as what they can irrefutably “prove”, with different interpretations of the same data leading to differing physical/mental behaviors and attitudes. The classic junior high experiment where worms put in water vs. alcohol show that worms swim happily in water but convulse/die in alcohol leads to the question – Should alcohol always be avoided or should alcohol be consumed regularly to avoid worms? SPHS research can often effectively utilize both methods with rigorous quantitative approaches alone possibly not providing all insight needed for effective communication to recreational and competitive athletes, and the lay public. Option 02 Psychological Behaviors

Option 02 this week has you contemplate previous coursework on psychological behaviors (fight-or-flight response to anxiety, intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, positive vs. negative self-talk, stress and mental energy management, psychological momentum and mental flow, achievement and maintenance of competing “in the zone”, overconfidence, fear of failure, self-efficacy, attentional focus, short- and long-term memory, mental resiliency, “next play” mentality, age and gender differences, over-aggression, body language and facial expression, pre-competition jitters, etc.) which directly relate to your capstone project. Please watch 12-minute “Inside the Mind of Champion Athletes” sports psychology lecture by Martin Hagger at TEDxPerth (Sport psychology – inside the mind of champion athletes: Martin Hagger at TEDxPerth) and discuss at least two behavior modification techniques (progressive muscle relaxation, biofeedback, meditation, imagery, appropriate goalsetting, systematic desensitization, pre-competition routines, etc.). Please cite some specific studies regarding how psychology and mental training can help alleviate negative behaviors and improve positive behaviors within your capstone final manuscript text and reference list using APA style.

Option 03 Physical Activities and Lifestyle Behaviors
Option 03 this week has you contemplate previous coursework regarding how physical activities and healthy lifestyle behaviors can promote physical and mental wellness in a manner that is directly related to your capstone topic. Please review the latest Centers for Disease Control guidelines for physical activity and health benefits (Benefits of Physical Activity) and share how these concepts directly relate to your capstone project. Temptations to lead a sedentary lifestyle combined with overindulgence of nutrient-poor foods and other poor habits such as related to technology often lead to health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, cancer, sleep disorders, etc. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits is often more challenging than initially anticipated with sustainable fitness and dietary practices often taking time to show tangible results which causes many to search for a quick fix.
