SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique used to help an individual or organization identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to project planning or business activities. Through the SWOT analysis, an individual or organization can make informed decisions favoring the entity (Jean-François, In Drew, & In Lankas, 2015). This document seeks to analyze and report SWOTs of working in a nonprofit organization by utilizing data obtained from Assistant Director of Development in a nonprofit, and other secondary data.


  • Working in a nonprofit organization provides numerous job opportunities, especially when the organization is seeking to diversify and open up new branches.
  • Essentially, working in such an organization enables an individual work toward something he or she is passionate about while contributing positively to the society.
  • The job is flexible and allows an individual to work from different locations thus disenfranchising the normal office monotony (Jean-François, In Drew, & In Lankas, 2015).
  • Working with different clients and people from different economic and cultural backgrounds enables an individual gain experience and appreciate their wellbeing.


  • Most nonprofit organizations rely on donor funds to execute their activities (Jean-François, In Drew, & In Lankas, 2015). Hence, people working in such an organization are compelled to work with fewer resources and sacrifice most of their time and resources with the sole faith of doing the ultimate good for the less fortunate.
  • Nonprofit organizations pay lower wages, however, they give their employees more benefits like flexible working hours (Potocan, & Nedelko, 2017).
  • Raising funds to keep the organization running is a tedious activity and results to employees sacrificing their time while engaging in such activities.


  • Due to the flexible working hours and meeting new people, an individual working in such an organization has the opportunity to grow within, both in life and interpersonal skills.
  • An individual working in a nonprofit organization has the opportunity to grow in his career since when new opportunities arise, they are considered first before opting for the larger public.
  • 46 percent of nonprofit are healthcare organizations (Potocan, & Nedelko, 2017), this makes it easier for individuals with public health, health administration, social politics, and other related healthcare education background leverage a career in such organizations.


  • Nonprofit organizations are exceptionally vulnerable to economic crisis (Potocan, & Nedelko, 2017). Charitable activities are some of the cash outflows that donors limit when faced with economic adversities.
  • Public charities are presumed to a higher standard than for-profits activities (Potocan, & Nedelko, 2017). Since they rely on donor funds, nonprofit organizations are obliged to shun the discernment of impropriety, as insignificant scandals can adversely damage the organization’s reputation. Therefore, such external factors makes it a challenge to work and excel in a nonprofit organization.

Executive Summary

Working in a nonprofit organization presents significant challenges, threats, opportunities, weaknesses, as well as strengths. However, working in such an organization subjects an individual to numerous opportunity for growth compared to challenges. Subsequently, it allows an individual contribute his or her knowledge for the greater good of other people’s wellbeing. Notably, working in such an organization presents career satisfaction and enables one to fulfill his or her purpose of being human. Landing a career in nonprofit organizations may require an individual to prove their motives through volunteering and taking internship programs offered in such organizations. Subsequently, working as a volunteer or as an intern in nonprofit organizations improve the quality of an individual’s Curriculum Vitae, thus increasing the chances of landing a job in such organizations or any other public or private organization.
