Sample Literature Review Paper on Drug Use and Delinquency of Marijuana

Marijuana is a psychotropic drug that comes from the Cannabis plant. Marijuana is one of
the most abused drugs globally. Herb, Ganja, Weed, Pot are just a few of its slang names. Delta-
9tetrahydrocannabinol, also called THC, is one of the chemicals contained in Marijuana that
alters the minds of smokers. Marijuana can be smoked or mixed with foodstuffs. This drug has
both short and long-term effects on the user. According to the World Health Organization,
approximately 147 million people consume Marijuana (Chait et al., 2019). Recently, the growth
rate of Cannabis has been spreading tremendously worldwide, given that youths are the most
common users. The consumption of Marijuana has brought about conflicts and contributed to
road accidents due to the unruly behavior of the consumer. Due to the addiction-related to this
drug, Marijuana has greatly affected teenagers who mostly drop out of schools mainly due to
reported indiscipline cases reported in schools. This paper will discuss the effects, delinquencies,
and treatments related to this drug.

Effects of Marijuana

Consumption of Marijuana has both short-term and long-term effects on a consumer.
Hallucinations, visual impairments, and short-term memory issues are among the short-term
effects related to the consumption of Marijuana. Marijuana has some mind-altering compounds
that affect the consumer's brain (de Andrade et al., 2021). The long-term effects of smoking
Marijuana include addiction, antisocial, relationship problems, and many others. Consumption of
Marijuana affects the circulatory, respiratory, and central nervous systems. In the respiratory
system, Cannabis tends to increase the risks of being diagnosed with bronchitis and lung diseases
to a regular smoker. Smoking Cannabis increases the chance of getting lung cancer illness since
it contains carcinogens. The circulatory system is affected by increasing heartbeat rates since the
THC chemical is transported from the lungs to the bloodstream. When THC reaches the central

nervous system, it causes the brain to release dopamine in large amounts, affecting the
consumer's sensory perception.

Delinquencies Related to Marijuana

Cannabis affects health issues, but it also leads to crime among the users. When the
government addresses criminal activities, it has to go hand in hand with the abuse of drugs.
According to the FBI, in 2007, approximately 3.9% of the 14,831 deaths were Marijuana-related
(Manasrah et al., 2021). Consumption of Marijuana has led to criminal activities like prostitution,
theft, murders, etc. The rise of Cannabis is rising rapidly. According to the United Nations Office
on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), half of the drug-related crimes are caused by Marijuana
consumption. Most Cannabis users participate in criminal activities to pay for their drugs. Most
bhang users tend to participate in criminal activities since they are under the influence and
stimulated. Society and government are facing challenges in reducing the use of drugs, but the
rise of drugs abuse is not ready to be curbed. The most affected people by this pandemic are the
youths. Therefore, the government is forced to invest in rehabilitation centers rather than
investing in generating-income projects.

Treatment Pertaining Marijuana

According to the World Health Organization, in 2012, approximately 950,000 people
addicted to Marijuana received treatment globally (Choi et al., 2019). Approximately half of
those who go for treatment are teenagers. Due to the increase in Marijuana disorders, many have
decided to go for treatment. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Marijuana treatment rose from 7% in 1993 to 16% in
2003 (Choi et al., 2019). Government and health-related organizations are trying to set up

rehabilitation and treatment centers for those addicted to drugs and are ready to give up on them.
The victims receive therapy and full-scale treatment on their journey to quit consuming
Marijuana. These treatment centers mainly admit regular daily drug users. Society and
government organizations related to health are now educating young people on the hazardous
effects of Marijuana to control the rising pandemic in the community.

Marijuana has affected society, especially young people being that it is the most
commonly trafficked and abused drug compared to other drugs. Consumption of Marijuana has
both short-term and long-term effects on the consumer. Marijuana leads to health problems like
bronchitis lung cancer, among other diseases. It causes body malfunctioning, but it also leads to
criminal activities. Marijuana and other drug abusers involve themselves in crimes to pay for
their drugs. Marijuana has also caused deaths due to conflicts and unruly behaviors.
Moreover, it has also contributed to traffic accidents due to the health effects that come
hand in hand with it. This has made it mandatory for the government and health-related
organizations to put up some health facilities for the treatment and rehabilitation of Marijuana
consumers. This can boost the economy even in the future since most young men will become
lucrative in society.
