Sample Logistics Paper on Transportation/ Logistics

Logistics is an interesting subject to individuals as well as entire communities. The role of the logistics industry is enormous in any economy from the supply chain to the personnel transportation contexts. I personally love logistics as an industry and as a subject due to its continuous presence in the society. For instance, logistics plays an essential part in the economy, and can even be described as a back-bone to the economy. This is based on the contribution of the transportation industry independently to the economy. Logistics enhances movement of people from one place to another, resulting in the transfer of human resources from one region to the other. Practices such as labor outsourcing are built on the foundation of logistics and it is impossible to accomplish this without the concept of logistics. Any practice that transfers labor results in revenue generation in one place relative to another hence improves the national GDP.

Still in the transportation aspect, logistics is an inescapable pillar in the supply chain dynamics. In every industry transportation of raw materials and final products through distributorships is mandatory. Manufacturing industries cannot be sustained without effective strategies for raw material collection, manufacturing processes and product distribution. Each of these aspects is directly linked to the practice of logistics in the industry. Without the logistics aspect, raw materials cannot be moved to the manufacturing site and the final products cannot be moved from the site. This only means that no production can take place without logistics. This is sufficient to make logistics a huge part the supply chain.

While the role of logistics in the supply chain is one of the major reasons why I like logistics, it is not the only reason. Logistics is a key player in public policies especially those pertaining to environmental conservation. Through the years, efforts at environmental management have been focusing on reducing the emissions from the transportation sector. To some extent, this has been successful as policies are formulated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through practices such as the use of non- leaded fuels and more environment friendly energy sources in the transportation industry. Based on the emphasis that has been placed on logistics in regards to environmental conservation, it can be said that logistics is one of the key industries that impact on the environment. Anything geared towards environmental management raises important questions to the stakeholders. This makes it possible to conduct researches on topics such as the environmental management issues and the impacts of green house gases. With this in mind, logistics can be linked to increased awareness in the environmental conservation practices. It thus makes more sense to me when placed in this context compared to other common subjects.

Although the major impacts of the logistics industry on the environment are linked to the emission of green house gases, logistics also offers a subject of value to me and to the society due to the availability of many strategies for risk management in the industry. Initially, environmental deterioration could also be caused by the deposition of non- biodegradable body parts of vehicles and other logistics equipment. Issues such as accidents which led to the abandonment of such parts could be handled through insurance covers which catered for the costs. This led to the establishment of effective procedures for risk identification and management in logistics. Insurance covers are available for a variety of risks in logistics and identifying and taking appropriate measures with regards to payment of premiums is a key factor in logistics. Accessing many insurance options makes logistics a better choice of investment compared to other options.

The many options for risk management in logistics also provide many opportunities for logistics planning, a factor that makes logistics all the more attractive. In any industry, strategic planning plays an essential role in business success. Any industry that offers an opportunity for ease of planning can be considered to be a potentially profitable industry. Some of the options available in logistics include passenger and cargo transportation. Each of these is profitable and thus attractive depending on the target market and availability of advertisement options. Similarly, both frameworks provide essential services where needed and cannot be done away with. The fact that the logistics industry gives the opportunity to vary the approaches to business makes it a flexible industry, which can be the preference of many in terms of business choice.

Despite the many strengths of the industry which make it attractive to me and to the general public, the main issue that faces logistics is the environmental management concern relative to the clean energy prices. On the one hand, the global attitude is shifting more towards conservation of natural resources such as mineral fuels and the environment. Most of the equipment used in logistics is dependent on mineral oils. While necessary, the pressure implied on the environment through the use of such fuels is immense. As such, the logistics industry is encouraged to take up the use of clean energy sources such as bio-ethanol. These alternatives are costly and result in huge financial pressures on the users.
