Problem Solving

It is no news for a person to be in a hurdle due to a certain problem or issue. Problems are certainly inevitable part of life that no human being can evade. Thus, it is eminently vital for people to develop and hone their problem-solving skills. Problem-solving skills have proved to be especially valuable techniques in coming up with solutions meant to tackle personal, organizational and team problems. Even though a vast majority of people are dubious when trying to tackle their problems, stellar problem-solving skills serve as a fundamental tool in solving all issues. Problem-solving technique entails different steps and procedures. First and foremost, one is required to identify the problem, analyze and find the root cause of the problem, formulate possible solutions, and implement some of the best solutions in a bid to solve the issue.

Defining the Problem

Defining the problem is the most important step as it creates a foundation for the rest of the procedures. This step involves a lot of diagnosis on a given situation or scenario. This is the most critical step as one is required to identify the right problems. It is also important for a person to investigate the root cause of a given problem (McCain, 2005). This knowledge will assist one to look on suitable solutions that would solve the problem right from its root cause. This step my take quite sometime before discovering the primary problem in a particular situation. Identifying the problem allows one to develop sound solutions that will help in resolving the problem. However, if one makes wrong conclusions when identifying the problem, he/she will fail to accurately solve the issue. One is thereby advised to be keen and adopt several techniques such as; brainstorming, interviewing and by administering questionnaires (McCain, 2005).

Analyzing the Problem

Analyzing the problem is the second step after identifying and defining the problem. This step is regarded as being equally important as the first step. In this step, one needs to explore all possible and probable causes of the problem. This step is clearly important as it allows one to analyze and identify the root causes of a given major or minor problem. Analysis of the problem does not only allow one to identify the root causes of the problem but also categorize the causes as being direct or indirect (McCain, 2005). One thereby needs to be equipped with remarkable analytical skills that will allow him/her to classify the problem as being simple or complex.

Generating Options or Solutions

                Finding suitable solutions to the problem is the third step after the analyzing the problems. This is regarded as a crucial step because one is required to provide key solutions to the identified root causes of the problem. One is thereby tasked with the duty of identifying suitable possible solutions to the identified problems (McCain, 2005). Analysis on the broadly identified solutions is normally done as one narrows down his solution options to a few of the most suitable workable solutions. The solutions are thereby tried before being implemented and accepted as the best solution needed in tackling the primary issue.

Evaluation of the Solution

The fourth step of solving a problem is evaluating the identified suitable solutions. This procedure requires one to critically analyze the merits and demerits of opting for a particular solution (McCain, 2005).  This procedure enlightens one of the possible mishaps that might become a stumbling block when solving the problem. This thereby allows one to be aware of the possible challenges and thus prepare to tackle the hitches in an amicable manner. This process is essential when one is faced with the task of choosing the best solution from an array of possible solutions. It is at this step where one is able to analyze the quantity of resources and finances that are required when solving a particular issue.

Making the Decision

Making a decision is an important step that brings one closer to his/her quest of solving a problem. This step should take place after all the possible solutions have been tested on their credibility, affordability, and effectiveness. Having assessed the negative and positive effects of opting for a certain solution, one is advised to choose a solution with the least limitations and more advantages. For one to make proper decisions, he or she may seek assistance and advice from the experts who include; counselors and financial analysts among any others (McCain, 2005). Additionally, one may hold talks and detailed discussion meetings with various important parties who include; the customers, shareholders, the management among other important parties. The discussion meetings are crucial as one is made aware of the disadvantages of opting for a given solution and why other solutions are better off.

Implementation of the Solution

The final step of solving a problem is the implementation of he chosen solution. This is an integral step that finalizes the entire process of solving the identified problems. It is therefore important for one to plan and design the most suitable manner of implementing the chosen solutions.

An example of a case scenario

Identifying the problem: This case scenario talks of a career woman who is faced with the arduous task of managing all her responsibilities and commitments. Aside from being a career woman,  she is a mother to two sons,  a daughter, a soccer coach and also works part time during the weekend. She has also discovered that her health was slowly deteriorating after the doctors discovered that she could be suffering from high blood pressure. The primary problem in this scenario is that most of the responsibilities that the victim ought to attend to are overlapping with regards to date and time. She is also overworking herself with a myriad of duties.

Analyzing the Problem: The root-cause of this problem resides with the number of duties that the victim is required to fulfill. The victim is overwhelmed with a myriad of tasks that urgently demand her attention. She’s supposed to attend her children’s organized events,  attend to work,  coach her team,  study for her exams, take care of her parents, and take care of her health status. She also is faced with financial challenges as she also has to purchase her prescribed medications.

Generating Options or Solutions: For starters, the victim has to make priorities in line with the most urgent and important responsibilities to the least urgent and less important activities. In case she is unable to attend to all the responsibilities,  the victim can evade the least important activities.  Thus, the victim may inform the people in charge of her certain responsibilities on her inability to perfom them.  For instance,  the victim may resign from her part time work during the weekends so that she can attend to more important matters.  In order to reduce her blood pressure,  the victim ought to create time to rest.

Evaluation of the Solution: In order to remain healthy,  the victim needs to stop overworking and only attend to the most important tasks.  Thus,  the victim should resign from part time weekend job and temporarily resign from coaching until she regains her good health.

Making the Decision: The victim decided to resign from her part-time job and coaching.  She also decided to look for good schools within the location that she resides in so that she could attend to her parental responsibilities. In doing so,  she relocated to a bigger house where she could live with her children.  She still retained her Monday to Friday job.

Implementation of the Solution: In a months time, the victim moved her sons to a new school within the location she resides in. She also moved in to a larger house where she lived with her two children. She resigned from her part-time job and decided to spend more time with her sons during the weekend when she could also rest.
