Technology refers to systems and devices used for practical purposes whereas Information technology refers to the use of computers to store data which can be used in the day-day running of an organization. The integration of technology to healthcare can be very useful especially in the storage of patient information and sharing the information with their physicians. Advances in information technology are revolutionizing the tech and medical worlds. In the last few years, artificial intelligence, retargeting and automation have been realized.

Current and Future Advances and Issues in Healthcare

In healthcare, technology is playing a huge role as it is used for patient registration, storage of patient records and lab tests. For instance, there is Electronic health record which has centralized of patient information improving their care. Additionally, there is portal technology which has enabled patients to access medical records and interact with physicians’ online learning more about their health. Moreover, it boosts the patient’s confidence and even helps them challenge the doctors when they give wrong information. This in turn makes the medical practitioners effective and ready in case of queries (Wilson, 2015). Therefore, in future and with the improvement of technology, there will be improved public health because of improvement in medical knowledge. However, with the improvements comes risks which can be costly. for example, while a centralized patient record storage is cheap and efficient, it can be catastrophic if the system has problems or is hacked and the patient information is used against them.

Telemedicine

It refers to the use of medical information to improve a patient’s health and is done through electronic communication. It uses videoconferencing through apps such as skype and transmission of digital images online (Oliveira et al., 2014).  Therefore, telemedicine could be adopted by Healing Hands Hospital to deal with patients in need of medical information although they are far.

Pros and cons

It is very convenient and cheap as the patient does not incur travel costs and other costs associated with travelling such as time but just sits and communicates electronically.  Therefore, they save not only time but also costs. Additionally, telemedicine services are easily available because all one needs it to be online to receive services and they are availed at any time. However, since services are administered online and information is shared, it is susceptible to hacking and security breach which can lead compromised patient records which can in turn be used to blackmail them (Wilson, 2015). Furthermore, it is very challenging to prescribe medications without the physical examination of the patient. Moreover, it is costly especially during its commencement period because telemedicine providers need to be trained on how to use telemedicine equipment and have a license.

How Would the Technology Affect Providers, Consumers and Payers?

Although telemedicine holds a lot of promise as is saves time and cost and increases patient satisfaction without the traditional visit to the doctor, providers and payers are yet to embrace it. This is because, investing in telemedicine is seen as a risky endeavor as one needs money to open up a platform and compensations by payers are not guaranteed (Oliveira et al., 2014). However, consumers have fully embraced it is a great way to save money due to its lack of travel costs and time saving technique.

Conclusion

As illustrated above, the last decade has had a momentous improvement in information technology and medical knowledge which has facilitated telemedicine and despite its challenges has been embraced by the people because it saves money, time and services are easily accessed. This means that in future, telemedicine will take further strides with improved technology hence improved health care.
