Delegation is the transference of a nurse’s responsibility for task performance to another member in nursing care while retaining outcome accountability. Delegation involves the consignment of the enactment on tasks that involve the healthcare consumer. Responsibilities related to making a nursing judgment, however, cannot be delegated. Delegation in nursing care is essential for prioritizing patient care, assessment, and evaluation of health care services.

Decision making about delegation is based on principles and policies to ensure responsible and effective delegation in nursing care. The first policy is the identification of tasks for delegation based on client needs. The right task is delegated to the right person with the required scope of practice under the given circumstances. Moreover, delegation requires the utilization of the rights of delegation. These include the right person, the right task, the required circumstances, directions and communication, and the recommended evaluation and supervision.

Another policy requires ensuring of appropriate skills education and experience of the personnel required to perform a required task. Delegation should be done following the differentiation in practice for all the staff members (Blais & Hayes, 2016). The staff members vary in terms of knowledge, skills, and competencies. Therefore, delegation is based on their competency in the required area. Nursing care is delegated to another only when deemed competent in the given role.

Another policy is the requirement of supervision and evaluation of the staff member to perform the given task. The supervision might be through direct observance and indirect observance of the patient’s safety and the quality of the services offered (Blais & Hayes, 2016).  The scope of practice is also considered during the evaluation. The nursing care staff is not allowed to perform any practices that are beyond their scope.

Furthermore, the nurse is held accountable for the establishment of systems for assessment, monitoring, verification, and communication of the requirements for the delegated responsibilities. The delegated tasks should be within the caregiver functions, involve no modification from one care situation to another that will endanger the life of the healthcare consumer.


The qualifications include the ability to perform data collection, planning, implementation and evaluation of health care.  The personnel should be in a position to create health care consumer plans and evaluate their effectiveness based on the type of care given. The required personnel should also be able to perform care evaluation under the supervision and guidance of a registered nurse without endangering the life of the healthcare consumer. The required personnel is also required to have documented competency for the task and have the necessary skill to perform it.  The colleague should also have proper education and training in healthcare with experience. The position description should be in line with the requirements of the task. The personnel should also be able to monitor and assess the healthcare consumer and know the type of care given.

Delegation is a set skill that ought to be taught and practiced to increase efficiency and proficiency in nursing care delivery. It is a process involving professional development and application of critical thinking. The skill is improved through education and experience. The skills are learned and developed over time.  Knowing the skills and abilities of delegates is essential in the delegation process. Delegation is also dependent on work relationships. The registered nurses, therefore, assume accountability for development and consistency with delegation policies.
