Sample Nursing Paper on Attributes of an Exemplary Nursing Leader

Attributes of an Exemplary Nursing Leader

Over the past decades, it has been established that effective leadership is a significant component of achieving the organizational objectives and performance. Studies indicate that factors such as a shortage of resources, poor work quality, and unskilled staff have contributed significantly to the poor performance of health facilities (Hao & Yazdanifard, 2015). The nursing profession is essential in healthcare. It is also quite sensitive because it deals with the lives of people and mistakes could result in death. Like in other industries, leadership determines the success or failure of nursing. Therefore, this paper outlines attributes of a good nursing leader as stipulated by Dr. Christophe during our fifteen-minute interview.

Louisiana medical health center is one of the clinics that have greatly benefited the community by providing quality patient care services. The facility is managed by Dr. Christophe (Not his real name) who has directed the entity since its formation in 2006. Having attained a doctorate in pathology, masters in clinical nursing, and a having a background in anesthetist makes him one of the most skilled and experienced leaders in the hospital. Dr. Christophe is known for his exemplary performance in the management of his employees, which has resulted in the hospital being considered the best in the region.

Attributes of an Exemplary Nursing Leader

According to studies, an effective leader can develop a functional work setting for all the health practitioners (Mannix, Wilkes & Daly, 2013).  Some of the attributes outlined by the manager include trust, role model, team player, motivator, innovator, and one that can understand emotions.

According to the nursing leader, trust is a major component in exemplary leadership as it involves organizational employees having confidence in a leader. The value plays a pivotal role in enhancing the institutional performance and commitment of the staff to their respective responsibilities. When the workers build confidence in their leaders, it indicates that the people bestowed with the managerial task are good at their work. Such an environment promotes effective coordination among the personnel (Hao & Yazdanifard, 2015). Furthermore, trust aids in developing a positive corporate culture, which influences the conduct and attitudes of the staff.

An exemplary leader is one that displays and promotes the teamwork spirit to facilitate organizational performance and promote customer satisfaction. According to various studies, managers that need to enhance effective change in the entities need to embrace collaboration and good communication among workers (Harris, Bennett & Ross, 2014). Teamwork assists in the exchange of information and encourages innovation, which is an essential aspect in attaining business objectives. Equally, communication not only aids in the understanding of each other and coordination but also enables the sharing of ideas and opinions.

Motivation is an essential component in the managerial system as it significantly helps in achieving job objectives and facilitating organizational performance. According to the doctor, employees are the engine of every institution thus there is a need to satisfy them to obtain a productive outcome. Awarding the best performing workers with tokens such as cash prizes, paid holidays, and sponsoring their education plays a role in building a competitive environment among the workforce (Hao & Yazdanifard, 2015). Equally, including staff in the decision-making process makes them feel like part of the entity thereby increasing their job morale.

Examples of how Dr. Christophe Demonstrates the Nursing Leadership Qualities

According to one of the nurses I interacted with, Dr. Christophe is honest and has never involved in corrupt dealings. Moreover, he implements his promises to the employees, which has helped in building trust between him and the staff. Equally, the manager has developed a program that is used to evaluate the performance of workers and award the outstanding team at the end of the year.  The director is known for his inclusive approach in decision making whereby he incorporates the employees when there is a need to make a change in the hospital.

Evidence-Leadership Reflection

As a registered and practicing nurse in one of the community health facilities in the state, I have various leadership skills, including emotional intelligence, team player, and learner. I can understand people’s emotions, which has greatly helped me avert conflicts during intense discussions. Being a team player and learner, I have been able to develop new ideas through the sharing of information with colleagues, a factor that has helped in enhancing job performance. However, I have neglected trust and motivation. I plan to incorporate the technique in my future positions to assist in building a functional working environment.

Conclusion

Effective leadership is one of the components that are significant in enhancing organizational performance and job satisfaction among employees. The nursing sector is not any different from other sectors when it comes to the need for excellent leadership for success. According to Dr. Christophe, attributes of an exemplary leader include trust, motivation, and teamwork and communication. Trust and motivation are essential in a corporation as they help in achieving institutional objectives and building positive syndicate culture. As such, I will incorporate some of these traits stated by the mentioned manager to develop a functional working environment when in a similar position.
