Can the use of traditional medicine improve women’s recovery during postpartum period?

This is an important question to consider, as postpartum can be a time of adjustment for new mothers. Many cultures around the world have a tradition of using natural home remedies during this time to support recovery. While traditional forms of healing are sometimes perceived as ‘folklore’ they can contain valuable insight and advice on how best to nurture and heal oneself. Evidence-based research is needed in order to understand if these forms of traditional medicine can help in the recovery process related to postpartum, a possible key question being whether efficacy is greater than conventional medical treatments alone. Determining the reliability of anecdotal evidence in relation to improving postpartum recovery is paramount for realizing this potential.

With a 40-60% increase in maternal morbidity and mortality between 2000 and 2015, this is an important question to consider. Postpartum care is vital for long term physical, psychological and social well-being of mothers, however traditional medicine may have answers that are yet to be explored. It provides solutions that enhance reproductive health throughout the life cycle and focuses on the mother’s holistically with attention to nutrition and lifestyle changes. By discovering if traditional medicine could improve postpartum recovery, potential risks associated with modern medical approaches could be avoided while providing supportive strategies for new mothers. Further research should examine if traditional medicine has proven strategies that reduce risk during the postpartum period and whether such strategies can be safely integrated within existing healthcare systems.

Step 2 -** Based on your investigation of the literature from the library and online resources, you will identify two articles that you will use to support your question and work towards development of your Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal.

Acquire: Search for and retrieve the best evidence to answer the clinical question.

Using your two selected journal articles (that support changing the clinical practice to improve the gap), you will complete the first two rows in the literature matrix using the template provided (see attached).
Read your two journal articles and extract the necessary information needed to complete each row for each article.

Thus, at the end of this week, you will have two out of the six rows of the literature review matrix completed. You will return to the literature review matrix in future weeks.

Helpful Information
It is best to thoroughly review each article and then synthesize the information for each section in your own words (if you can), rather than copying straight from the article.

As an example, you can review any literature, systematic, or integrative review article and typically find a literature review matrix. Articles of this nature generally have strict word count limits, so the matrix is usually very concise—but this will give you an idea of how the information is extracted from each article.

For our purposes (and generally), the literature review matrix should include research articles. Typically, these articles will have an abstract available with sections for their purpose and aims, background, methods, design, results, and conclusions; or these sections may be located within the body of the paper.

May use 1 of those suggested articles, feel free to use other ones
