Human health highly depends on clinical research to make critical decisions. The study integrates with patients’ values and clinical know-how to deliver high quality and cost-efficient healthcare. Nursing research is an expanding field where nursing experts can contribute their skills and knowledge to the subject of nursing care. Currently, the healthcare delivery system has changed dramatically (Polit & Beck, 2012). Nurses get in touch with the patients’ intimate values, such as their socio-economical, emotional, and also physical needs. The findings of the research can be shared with the health care community hence improve the quality of health services delivery. Evidence-based nursing gives the nurses the confidence in using the most efficient practice in improving the health care of patients. Nurses need to understand what research entails so that they can be able to conduct their investigations. Knowing the basic principle of research also helps nurses to be able to interpret studies in the field hence enhancing nursing care. The paper aims to draw an understanding of basic research requirements.
Quantitative research tends to be more precise than the qualitative approach. The information gathered quantitatively is in numeric form. Quantitative analysis can use the statistics found to give a general view of the study. Using this type of research requires an understanding of the variables. The independent variable relies on a premise caused by other variables and dependent variables, which causes other variables. Studying the relationship between the variables ensures that one obtains accurate study from the highly controlled environment. Quantitative research also uses samples to represent a population making it objective. Quantitative instruments include questionnaires, biophysical measurements, self-reporting tools, and observation. A questionnaire is a set of questions given to the participants that are related to the study. Researchers use questionnaires to find the answers to their questions using information filled (QSEN, 2018). . This makes it possible for the subjects to answer sensitive topics truthfully without fear of being judged. Quantitative research enables nurses to combine best practices and experience to gather useful information. It helps in identifying the obstacle in healthcare provision that prevent nurses from offering quality care; this leads to the improvement of care quality. Additionally, quantitative research helps the nurses to survey different aspects of the patient while remaining culturally sensitive. The analysis enables the nursing practitioners to understand the more in-depth understanding of the population, including their preferred services leading to the improvement of the sector.
Qualitative research uses a primary inductive process to obtain data from the participants. The technique is relatively newer than the quantitative method in the field of nursing research. Qualitative research makes the practitioner treats a patient’s case as an individual rather than a medical condition. It can shed light on many health care issues leading to the development of comprehensive theories. Qualitative research equips nurses with knowledge of how illness affects the patient’s life. One of the types of qualitative design is the case study. The case study is originated from Frederic Le Play in 1829( Polit & Beck, 2012).. It uses enables researchers to observe behaviors to understand the phenomena they are studying. The research gathered through Qualitative practice helps nurses to make informed decisions on clinical issues and in determining the patient’s outcome.
Sampling is a sub-set of the whole population selected for s study. Sampling facilitates the collection of data, primarily when a large population is being studied (Brannen,2017). It also enables researchers to conclude complex situations. Additionally, sampling it cheaper and more efficient. Sampling strategies used in the quantitative analysis are simple random, stratified random, and Multi-Stage Sampling. Simple Random sampling is also known as a non-probability sampling, and it involves selecting chooses the subjects indiscriminately ensure that every subgroup of the population gets an equal chance of selection. Stratified random sampling consists of dividing a population into stratum; samples are then selected randomly from each “strata” then combined to the overall sample.
Nurses need research to help them have advance knowledge in the field. Studies done by the experts in the field enable nursing students to access available information in the face of clinical challenges. The knowledge acquired is used by nurses in their clinical practice. Research improves the nurse’s understanding of different phenomenon making their practice safer. Nursing research not only improves service delivery to the patients but makes the method safer. Evidence-based practices are essential in making clinical-decisions (QSEN, 2018). Nurses have started embracing the practice because it is more efficient and accurate. The nursing practitioners have employed evidence-based practice in establishing the policies guiding the practice. Research is vital in gathering evidence of different clinical phenomena. Concentrating on studying a specific phenomenon helps the nursing researchers to gather a comprehensive report on the particular situation. Therefore, research is essential in providing nurses with reliable findings hence critical in the creation of evidence-based information.
