Overview of Telemedicine

Telemedicine can be defined as the application of telecommunications technology in the delivery of health care services similar to those provided in face-to-face encounters between health care professionals and patients (Cannon, Jurski, & Ulferts, 2014). In other words, the process allows history taking, performance of investigations, conducting a clinical examination, as well as the management of a patient with the patient and health care consultant at different physical locations (Ganapathy, 2018). The technology is fast attracting global attention, particularly in the United States where over 20 percent of the population living in rural areas hardly access healthcare because of geographical constraints. My interest in telemedicine is compounded by the fact that it could help to address the national problem of the lack of access to healthcare services, which results in high mortality rates. I find telemedicine very efficient since I use it at work concerning neuro because we do not have a neurologist.

Summary of What Is Learned from Research

From research, it has been learned that the global healthcare industry is witnessing significant improvement with the gradual adoption of telemedicine technology. Telemedicine, in itself, is a technology that can be used to address health service shortages experienced in rural settings through the application of telecommunications technology in the delivery of health services similar to those offered to patients when in physical contact with healthcare professionals (Ganapathy, 2018). The above sources agree that telemedicine could play a key role in the international healthcare industry that has been rocked with issues of physician shortages in rural areas. They further note that in the U.S., for instance, a whopping 20 percent of the total population living in rural areas lack access to health care because of geographical challenges (Cannon, Jurski, & Ulferts, 2014). Despite the interest and focus on telemedicine, people have ignored the accompanying costs that could also raise healthcare costs. Concerned authorities should step in address the cost problems that could rock the adoption of telemedicine in the international healthcare industry.
