Bertram was a count of Rossillion who went into the Service of the king of France after the demise of his father. On the other hand, Helena was a Countess ward and the daughter of a physician. She had confessed her love for Bertram to the Countess who was empathetic since she knew that the two could not marry due to difference in their social status. However, the Countess allows Helena to visit France and try her remedy on the ailing king, and her luck at winning the affection of the Count of Rossillion.
Fate was kind to her since her remedy completely cured the king. As an expression of his gratitude, the king bestows her gift to choose the husband she wishes to marry. Palpably, she chooses to marryBertram, who initially refuses since she is not an aristocrat. However, in fear of displeasing the king he agrees to the marriage. He then leaves for Florence and send Helena back home. After some time in a letter, he tells her that he will only consider loving her after she will take the ring from his finger and be pregnant with his child.
Helena leaves for Florence in disguise of going on a pilgrimage mission. Once in Florence she learns that her husband is seducing Diana, an innkeeper’s daughter. After Helena recounts to Diana her identity and her ordeals, Diana agrees to help her and the two devise a ploy. Diana agrees to sleep with Bertram on condition that he will surrender his ring to him. He agrees and Helena switches place with Diana, thus sleeps with him and she is given the ring. On returning to Rossillion, Bertram is arrested for giving an engagement ring to Lafew’s daughter that the king had given to Helena. Helena reveals herself and recounts the tale of how the ring had come to be in his possession. Glad that Helena had saved her, Bertram loves her as his wife.
