Dealing With a Vulnerable Population

A researcher faces many problems in his or her endeavor in collecting data from the community. Ethical consideration is one of the problems that need to be solved at every stage in data collection. In dealing with a vulnerable population, the following challenges are deemed to emerge in the course of the research endeavor. First, winning the attention and trust of underprivileged individuals is a hard job to carry out as a clinician. Vulnerable people tend to be conservative in nature and demand assurance about information safety before they can participate in a research program. Thus, a nurse will first present his/her topic and explain the intention of designated research (Pollock, 2012).

Second, non-disclosure of critical data limits the researcher’s data presentation and accuracy level. Consequently, the information gathered is biased. Thus, the initiative will be rendered ineffective.  However, ethical consideration may be overlooked during this initiative where participants willingly offer personal data. The handler of the data may leak this information leading to ethical problems. Vulnerable communities are limited in regards to education and technological advancements. Approaching these people presents the biggest challenge to a nurse because she/he has to explain and expand on simple issues in order to instigate response (Mertz et al., 2014). The process implemented in selecting participants is lengthy hence time consuming. In some cases, a translator will be required to facilitate communication between the researcher and responders. Last, we have perception that is in most case negatively inclined. It means that a clinician will have to motivate members of the public before engaging in interview as a data collection method. On the other hand, the research due to the diverse nature of people involved will apply several data collection methods.

In conclusion, Vulnerability is influenced by nature and context of the research plan.
