Since time immemorial, different groups of people have expressed their views and feelings through rhythm and sound. The beat joins with harmonic sounds and voice to form what is referred to as music, which not only expresses the feelings but also conveys various messages about different issues in society. Music has played a significant role in the life of people for a long time, and as such, it can be deduced that music has had a big influence on us. However, it should be noted that people react differently to various music genres. Music is categorized in many distinct styles and genres, each dependent upon the setting or the environment and the message being delivered. Humanity has come to develop many different genres of music as well as approaches to divide it in groups based on rhythm, emotion, time period, or arrangement of music instruments. Irrespective of the different categories of music, it still has a big effect on the human mind and imagination, which directly translates into the bodily sensations.
Music affects different parts of the brain. The type of music influences the mood of those listening (Snyder 40). That is, music can make an individual feel sad, happy, inspired, depressed, active, or passive. It means that human brain responds differently to various types of music; being affected by music, brain can synthesize various feelings and sensations. Music often includes some idea that an artist tries to communicate to the listener. Sound vibrations pass a distinct message which the mind perceives as a happy song and triggers the body to dance, or it can be perceived as a sad message, which dampens the mood. An example is that of the praise and worship in churches where people get inspired and excited by the lyrics and melody and set their bodies ready for prayers. Each song has a different effect on the audience.
Music helps boost the brain functionality and stimulates the creation of certain brain chemicals that assist in inventiveness (Snyder 43). A productive way of releasing pressure is through listening to music, which relaxes the mind and soothes the body. Listening to music often increases the brain’s responsiveness, and as such, it helps to supersede the feeling of exhaustion.
Currently, the health sector is using music as a therapeutic way of addressing the psychosocial and emotional needs of patients; it is seen as an effective way of treatment. Research has established that music can help treat patients with autism and emotional trauma among other challenges (Snyder 45). Music helps patients to improve their concentration and reduce the stress, which gives the psychologist a good opportunity to address their patients’ needs and helps the body to heal. The potential of music to alter the actions of the brain and affect the way it works is a contributing factor that doctors use to provide effective treatment to their patients. Traumatized patients feel relaxed and free to share their feelings with a psychologist just from listening to soothing music.
Making a conclusion, music affects human mind and emotions. It can trigger different moods and even change the biochemical processes in human brain. Music is an important part of the day-to-day activities of many people, and given that it influences the functioning of the brain, it, in turn, improves the health of the body. Music has always been an important part of human life, and it always will be.
