Background

Health and safety are crucial aspects of any individual. The two terms define the performance of an output of an individual in any work related setup. Describing the health status of a person is the goal of every employee in any work setup. The term health and safety encompass a wide range of activities which are undertaken in a work environment setting. However, according to Harris and Nicolai, (2010) health and safety systems encompass undertakings of preventing people, employees, and stakeholders from being harmed, or from incurring losses and taking the right precautions in providing a satisfactory working environment.

Therefore,  health and safety system is a proactive approach in mitigating risks and managing situations likely to pose danger to employees in an effective manner. As mentioned by WHO,  (2008) over $ 170 billion per year is spent on wasteful and often preventable causes as a result of work related fatalities, injuries, ill health and other immeasurable sufferings. However, the key aspect of an effective health and safety system is  its corresponding management systems. Hence, health and system management  is a crucial aspect of the entire health and safety field in a work environment. WHO (2008) defines health and safety management system has a decisive factor in reducing the work related fatalities and injuries. Moreover, the institute of work and health bring in a set of integrated elements in an organization as composing a health and safety management systems. These elements include, planning, policy formulation, continuous improvement as well as work related risk evaluation.

However, health and safety is one field that encompasses many professionals all in an interactive environment of trying to address the work related risk and safety concerns. Weisman, (1995) Suggests this cadres of people specialize in specific roles ranging from safety profession to, occupational health specialist, compliance and inspection teams to psychotherapist and support teams to this field. In addition to this the most profession in the helm is the health and safety management systems profession. It is under this docket work environment decisions are made and implemented. Though acting in cooperation with other professionals, Health and safety management systems professionals, advance employee commitment, hazard prevention and control and the overall financial and cost consideration in handling risk mitigation.

Health and safety management system professional being at the helm of an organization policy formulation, implementation  and evaluation are such highly trained individuals. Though as (Papaleo, Cangiano, & Calicchia (2013) suggest, operating in this profession requires continuous skill development to respond to the dynamics of the ever increasing risk issues, are always looked upon to advise whenever unfamiliar circumstances arise.

Besides, HSMSP are equipped with special management skills that are acquired through training and continuous experiences in relation to general safety and health work environments. The management and leadership  skills are acquired through continuous training and experiences. In that regard, these professionals lead in the organization health and safety sector.  They have distinguished  qualification in management training and leadership.

However, policy formulation and implementation strategies are necessary training in advancing HSSMP career. To perform their duties well HSSMP professionals have diverse backgrounds in the careers. However, a mix of different subject background is considered essential in this profession. This fundamental knowledge is acquired in mathematics, physics, statistics, fire protection, process safety risk mitigation, investigation and analysis, training methods, environmental health construction safety, law and safety regulation, human behavior among other disciplines. Moreover, other HSSMP have health and safety study backgrounds, hence are more versed in strategy and work environments. Since, technology is very crucial in any organization. Training in this area is equally important to any HSSMP in executing the management duties effectively. Primarily, education in this area of health and management system is well advanced with great communication skills and outgoing characteristics.

Certification/Professional Organizations

Safety and health professionals are very vital in the running of any organization and apart from attaining their degrees  most organizations requires them to pursue further credentials. Mostly these credentials may include licenses and professional certification (Minter, 1999).  Some of this certification includes Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) Certifications. The Institute for Safety and Health Management (ISHM) offers this certificate with an aim of upholding management principles. It is achieved through integration of  safety measures in various levels of  the organization. However, the certifying body identifies a health professional as someone who is well acquainted with techniques and safety measures  skills and knowledge  by sitting for an exam or through experience. Furthermore, numerous opportunities pop up for a person with a CSHM certification. For instance, some exciting opportunities would eventually lead to the promotion of personnel dealing with safety health. This is because the certification provides an opportunity for recognition to persons who can provide health and safety measures competently. For one to attain this certification must complete a test as follows General  and business management which encompasses 20 percent  with 30 questions. This is followed by  management methods and system carrying 38 percent of the total marks with 57 questions. Then safety, health and environmental applications at 11 percent of the total marks with 17 questions, finally risk management and control at 31 percent of the total marks comprising of 46 questions.

In addition to health and safety certification, environmental standardization is also an important aspect. Some of this standardization includes the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 that provides a framework for a safe and healthy working environment. Furthermore, it gives the guidelines on how to incorporate some healthy and safety measures to the working environment which include   accidents and illness prevention measures. With this standardization, the management tends to benefit by minimizing the employer’s risk if the guidelines provided are followed in the latter. In addition, it results in better working environment due to the safe measures outlined in the standardization. Hence, a risk management system may be improved by incorporating a safety management system certification such as the international OHSAS 18001. It ensures that the employees are  always safe until they retire since it links healthy and safety measures to the management systems (inspector group, 2012).

  Salary/Demand

The salary demand for professionals practicing health and safety measures is significantly high with a range of about $30000 to $150000 for a highly qualified specialist. However, one’s salary depends largely on one’s experience in the occupation. For instance, in the united state according to a safety health survey of 2005 majority of the respondent earned more than $50000  annually. However, the majority had a working experience of between 5-10 years while those who earned more than $100,000 had a work experience of not less than 20 years. 

  Discuss major duties 

The occupational health and safety technicians have a wide range of duties to inspect various workplaces. The workplaces ranges from construction sites to offices and hospitals among others. They usually undertake the inspections to ensure that materials and products are not hazardous to the consumers or the personnel involved in their production. This is crucial for some of the products may result in death of the consumers of the products (O’Hara, 2012).

There other responsibility is to conduct investigations of  safety and health complaints that are forwarded to their departments  and give vivid solution. Others assist in identifying the human behavior, which may reduce some of the incidents. In addition to this, they give advice on any matter related to health and safety measure such as the protective and preventive measures that an organization may wish to adopt. Also, they enact laws and regulations related to safety and health practices. They are also responsible for monitoring and auditing the health and safety management system.

Thus, for any officer to be able to perform his or her duties diligently one should have a full understanding of the laws dealing with health and safety measured for one to be able to give and make concrete advice or decision that is essential in improving the health and safety of a workstation.

History of successes 

Health and safety seems too easy to mention that people do not get hurt, however in practice it seems too complex to achieve a safe institution. However, the HSMSP have performed a great role in ensuring that an institution has adopted safety and health practice to ensure that the institution stays safe and healthy. Over the past the flourishing of the management system has not always resulted to the expected results of proper health and safety measures, but through the adoption of a culture that supports the health and safety management systems and implementation of its recommendation has resulted in accomplishment of health and safety measures in institutions.

The history of the HSMSP dates back as early as 1974 after  a village was blown up due to an explosion at Nypro production facilities. This facilitated for institutions to adopt safety and health practices. Some corporations set up enhanced safety management to investigate for accidents. In those set ups, none of the of the personnel would be wrong, but it was a collective responsibility for all to ensure that health and safety practices were met through the use of regulation that would be followed in the institution. These regulations are always followed up to date, directing the management team and other professionals  on duties and  responsibilities meet health and safety practices ( Pearse, Gallagher and Bluff, 2013).

Opinion/Conclusion 

In conclusion, the HSMSP are very vital to ensure that the health and safety practices are accomplished in various institutions. This is because when the regulation and standards that the management team comes up with will ensure that people are always safe from hazardous substance by enhancing their good health.
