Online Learning


The current world is facing a major transformation in the learning sector as the online learning culture takes over as the current trend in the process of acquiring knowledge. Online learning has been embraced significantly by learners and teachers across the world as an efficient way of passing knowledge (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). There are different forms of online learning and the current evaluation will highlight all these trends. This evaluation contains different sections that will begin with an overview of online learning and proceed to show the interests in the topic. The second section involves an analysis of the various arguments in this field that will show the arguments made together with their reasoning, the bias and assess the credibility of the arguments. The next section will present my arguments on online learning and apply the concepts of the problem in everyday life.

Overview of Online Learning

The increasing of growth in technology has influenced various sectors in the world. Education has also been affected by this rapid technological changes as online learning takes a center stage in most learning processes in the world. Most students, teachers, parents and even guardians have welcomed the idea of online learning since they perceive it as cheap and easy as compared to the classroom face to face learning between the teachers and learners.

Online learning takes different forms such as network and digital learning. All these forms of online learning use technology as a mode of connection between the teacher and the learner. Technology is used as the medium of communication between the two parties. It can still enhance the one on one interaction between the teachers as the learner by use of audio-video devices. Also, the teacher can simply present notes to the student via the internet as the student responds to the queries and gets back to the teacher through the same technology.

Various scholars have come up and argued the issue of online learning on both the students and teachers. Some scholars have strongly condemned the adoption of this form of learning whereas some have supported the use of it (Piaget, Varma andWilliams, 1976). Online learning has often been preferred over the traditional one on one interaction between the teacher and the student. For instance, in the United States, the departments of education and information communication technology have argued that students who utilize online learning have performed better than those still using the traditional forms of learning. In their 2012 analysis, the reports from the departments showed that most learners who use online learning attend their lessons frequently and understand the various classroom concepts better than those who do not.

Personal Connection to the Topic

Online learning is a topic of interest since the world is undergoing a major technological transformation. Almost all the sectors in the economy are utilizing technology to enhance their performance. My interest is drawn to my future needs of seeking employment in a dynamic organization that will guarantee a good remuneration and other benefits. Ana analysis of the job market shows that the labor market absorbs graduates who are well versed with the economy.

Online learning allows learners to conduct more intense and research easily as opposed to the traditional methods of researching. Currently, learning is much easy with the internet since the net offers more resourceful and up to date information more than the traditional libraries (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). It is also that learners understand the changing trends in learning the potential changes of the future.

Presented Arguments

Description of the Argument

The US Department of education presents an evaluation of evidence-based practices in online learning where they argue that even though students who engaged in online learning practices performed fairly well in class as compared to those based on the face to face engagement with their teachers, these students failed in acquiring other basic concepts learned in class during physical interactions (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012).

They argue that the online learners failed to get the practical aspects of learning since some of the knowledge was passed only through apprenticeship and physical interaction between the learner and the teacher (Piaget, Varma andWilliams, 1976). Children lacked other out of class activities such experiments and playing with their colleagues and teachers. They also say that online tools of learning such as the internet affected learners negatively since they exposed them to negative social behaviors found online.

Facts of the Research

This research is based on digital learning and their effects on learners. The survey is interested in both the academic and non-academic performance of the learners (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). This is captured in the way the research compares the physical fitness and activity of the online learners and those exposed to the traditional face to face learning processes. It also compares the academic performance of these learners and argues that online learners perform well in their studies than the traditional face to face learners.

This research was also interested in evaluating the future paths of education as pertains online learning versus the face to face learning procedures. The study notes that online learning is becoming more influential and is quickly spreading to other parts of the world. It is therefore expected that this form of learning will be adopted and will replace the face to face learning in most instances.

Logic and Reasoning of the Argument and Avoidance of Bias

The research is a comprehensive evaluation of the facts. It advances in a clear manner that shows the arguments of the research (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). It begins with a clear description of the research. This introduces the reader of the study to the research and makes them understand the topic and any other background information that they should know.

The survey then conducts various analysis’ to help in bridging the existing gap of knowledge in this subject. The weaknesses evident in the study include the timelines for most of the expected events in the study (Piaget, Varma andWilliams, 1976). Even though the study was conducted between the years 2009 and 2012, the study has no timelines as pertains to the future expectations. It does not also expose the challenges related to online learning. It is evident that there are a number of factors affecting online learning which is not exposed in the research.

This study avoids any bias that may be associated with its weaknesses or being aligned to particular users. Another bias is that the study is only limited to the United States and between the periods of the research. All the arguments made, therefore, relate to this particular period alone and does not reflect the entire world. The study should, however, make arguments and research that is not only limited to the US but can also reflect what is happening across the world.

Credibility of the Argument

The arguments stated in the research are credible since there was an efficient survey done. The department gathered data from different respondents who participated in the study. The data reflected the views of both the learners and the teachers and thus were quite comprehensive (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). This fact makes the research credible. Further, a thorough literature analysis was conducted to establish what other scholars had done in this area of study. It was found out that various researchers had conducted their studies in this field and the findings of the current investigation coincided with those from other literature. This further makes the research credible as it covers different literature sources.

Alternative Argument

Even though the current learning environment is more suitable for the online learning practices, it is essential that learners and teachers also adopt some strategies that were initially used with the face to face learning (Piaget, Varma andWilliams, 1976). Face to face learning was also effective as a form of training in that it gave students the ability to learn directly from their teachers. Learning is not only limited to the academic processes of passing examinations in class. It is also about learning other outdoor activities that are essential in life.

Learners and teachers still need to interact with a number of cases. Firstly in some instances, the teacher would need to guide the learner in accomplishing some tasks. Experiments can also be done well and easily only if the learner and the teacher are together.

Logic and Reasoning

While everyone is acknowledging online learning and seems to be running away from face to face learning, it is important to note that the latter form of learning will not be eradicated anytime in the future (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). Online learning cannot fully replace face to face learning since learning sometimes needs the physical interaction of both the teacher and the learner.

Students need to learn through other forms of learning such as apprenticeship from their teachers and thus cannot be eradicated. Further, online learning has its own share of challenges such as the infrastructure needed. Often the video and audio elements used for online learning may fail or are costly. This makes online learning to be a difficult venture.

Weaknesses and Bias

This argument needs further research to identify the challenges that are related to online learning. There are ways that can be used to enhance online learning and minimize the challenges related to the learning methods (Piaget, Varma andWilliams, 1976). There is need to also research on the technical aspects of online learning to identify all the equipment needed for the process and how to enhance their performances.


Critical Thinking

To assess this topic clearly, there was the need to critically analyze a number of issues surrounding this topic. Firstly there was the need to understand the topic clearly and conduct a background study of all the factors affecting this topic (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). Through an analysis of the various studies done by other scholars on this subject, it was evident that there was the need for further research to bridge the gap in knowledge affecting this subject. The topic is quite new and has attracted various researchers to find out the factors underlying this issue.

To assess the strengths of the argument required a thorough analysis of arguments of different scholars and comparing them to come up with a solid conclusion of the argument (Piaget, Varma andWilliams, 1976). The analysis started with the analysis of the actual research to ascertain the sources and the data used if they are credible sources. This ensured that the information contained in these reports were credible for use.

Application in Everyday Life

In the future, this process will be useful in conducting any other further research in any field (Sun, Lin, and Yu, 2012). It has exposed the researcher to the right research procedures and allowed them to make logical arguments that guarantees the development of the right conclusion.
