Ethical Pitfalls

There are various complex ethical situations that exist in the contemporary society more so in the work place setting. Some of these ethical dilemmas include conducting personal businesses during company time, employee harassments, abusive language and taking credit among others (Rafner, 2010). For example, could it be right for an employee to schedule a doctor’s appointment using company phone lines for sick family members while on duty? This is an ethical dilemma that needs to be carefully handled in a professional manner. According to professional ethical standards, company managers should clarify if such an act is an offense. As such, cases such as illness should have exceptions clearly stated in the companies’ code of ethics. In relation to sexual or mental harassments, there should be specific language that states employees will not face punishments if they report such harassments. Furthermore, taking credit can be professionally dealt with by ensuring employees do specific individual tasks.

There are various steps that can be used to avoid contemporary ethical violations. Firstly, face complexities when making ethical decisions. Openly involve others in difficult situations like sexual harassments. Secondly, ensure that nobody is exempt from meeting adopted ethical obligations (Brooks, 2013). This means even the top executive must meet such standards. Thirdly, build trust among employees by speaking about the importance of responsibility and organizational values. Fourthly, ethics should be made a daily way of any operation and should not be separated from any company business. Fifthly, organizing ethics training programs for employees develops a culture of vigilance concerning complex situations (Brooks, 2013). Finally, positive ethical moments should be celebrated. For example, positive moments like continued lack of sexual harassments can be celebrated. With such steps, ethical complex situations would be appropriately addressed.
