  5. Factors affecting technology in education I. Jung talks about the big challenge teachers face in our society thanks to the rapid expansion of data. the fashionable technologies are demanding that teachers find out how to use these technologies in their teaching. Hence these new technologies increase the teachers’ training needs. Gressard and Loyd (1985) asserted that teacher’s attitudes toward computers are a key think about the successful implementation of ICT in education. They acknowledged that teachers don’t always have positive attitudes towards computers and their poor attitudes may cause a failure of the computer- based projects. Also, the most commonly cited barriers are: – lack of time – lack of access – lack of resources – lack of expertise and – lack of support (Ahirwar).

Impact of ICT on education

In educational context, ICT has the potential to increase access to education and improve its relevance and quality. Tinio (2002) asserted that ICT has a tremendous impact on education in terms of acquisition and absorption of knowledge to both teachers and students through the promotion of: Active learning, Collaborative and Cooperative learning, Creative Learning, Integrative learning, and Evaluative learning.

Positive impact

  1. Enhanced Teaching and Learning: Technological developments like digital cameras, projectors, mind training software, computers, Power point presentations, 3D visualization tools; all these have become great sources for teachers to help students grasp a concept easily.  It has to be understood that visual explanation of concepts makes learning fun and enjoyable for students. They’re able to participate more in the classroom and even teachers get a chance to make their classes more interactive and interesting.
  2. Globalization: When school in different parts of the state, students can “meet” their counterparts through video conferencing without leaving the classroom. Some sites, such as are used to help students learn foreign languages online by pairing a group of students with a teacher from another country.
  3. No Geographical Limitations: With the introduction of online degree programs there is hardly any need of being present physically in the classroom. Even several foreign universities have started online degree courses that student can join. Distance learning and online education have become very important part of the education system now a day.

Negative impact

  1. Declining Writing Skills: Due to the excessive usage of online chatting and shortcuts, the writing skills of today’s young generation have declined quite tremendously. These days, children are relying more and more on digital communication that they have totally forgot about improving their writing skills. They don’t know the spelling of different words, how to use grammar properly or how to do cursive writing.
  2. Increasing Incidents of Cheating: Technological developments like graphical calculators, high tech watches, mini cameras and similar equipment have become great sources to cheat in exams. It is easier for students to write formulas and notes on graphing calculators, with least chances of being caught.
  3. Lack of Focus: SMS or text messaging has become a favorite pastime of many students. Students are seen playing with their cell phone, iPhones day and night or driving and very often even between lectures. Being ever-connected to the online world has resulted in lack of focus and concentration in academics and to some extent, even in sports and extracurricular activities.

It makes students more excited to learn.  Help students with busy schedules, freedom to work at home on their own time.

Train students to learn new technology skills they can use later in the work place.  Decrease paper and photocopying costs, promoting concept of “green revolution”.

Many experts and experienced people say that, due to such technology in education, student’s imagination is affected, their thinking ability is reduced.

Sometime it’s also time-consuming from teacher’s point of view.  It is costly to install such technology.  There can be health issues too when used over limit.

Some students can’t afford modern computer technologies (Raja & Nagasubramani 34-35).

Literature Review

Educators often have the feeling that they are finding it harder and harder to reach their students. That is why they are so feverishly interested in smartboards or learning platforms or anything new on the market that might help. Every new tool seems like a possible solution, although sometimes educators really don’t know what the problem is or even if there is one. Regrettably, educators have become saddled with a multiplicity of tools, methods, approaches, theories, and pseudo theories, many of which have been shown by science to be wrong or, at best, only partially effective. In this article, which is drawn from the authors’ book “Urban Myths about Learning and Education,” they discuss these miracle tools and the idea that young people today are somehow “digital natives,” and they examine the fear that technology is making society and the nation’s students less intelligent. To illustrate that many claims about technology in education are in fact spurious, the authors focus on the following five myths and present research findings to dispel them: (1) New technology is causing a revolution in education; (2) The Internet belongs in the classroom because it is part of the personal world experienced by children; (3) Today’s “digital natives” are a new generation who want a new style of education; (4) The Internet makes us dumber; and (5) Young people don’t read anymore (De Bruyckere, Paul, & Casper 12). In their findings, the authors’ even summarized Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates whom you would hardly think to be against technology in education stated that, “Just giving people devices has a really horrible track record.” Nevertheless, the correct use of tools and resources have the potential to change education. They also stated that many claims about technology in education are spurious. Additionally, they stated that computers should be used to supplement and amplify the teachers’ teachings.

A reflection on both the challenges and opportunities offered by technology in an educational environment prevents that we over- or underestimate the value of technology in education. The primary aim of the article is to illustrate the complex nature of technology as medium. It is pivotal to understand the complex nature of technology in order to integrate it effectively and in a responsible manner into quality education. Building on the argument that technology is not a tool, but rather a medium that is shaping culture today, a discussion on the social embeddedness of technology as one of its outstanding characteristics, is outlined in the first section. In the light of that discussion, the following challenges will be attended to: the commodification of knowledge and education and how technology is the main driving force in this process. The complex nature of technology is introduced to dissect the possible implications for education. The impact of utilizing technology in education differs from context to context and therefore specific reference is made to the implications in the South African context, followed by the opportunity’s technology offers with specific reference to theological education (Cloete 1-7). In the discussion, it’s coined that, technology is not just a matter of innovation; it is also a matter of adoption by a critical mass of users, and it co-evolves with cultural, economic, political and other domains, each of which continually affects, and is in turn affected by the other. Technology is therefore more than just infrastructure or a tool that could be utilized as found fit. It requires a new social contract and moral vision prescribing to a society what is valuable and important. The fact that information and communication are mediated through technology makes it very desirable and alternatives almost unthinkable.

Since innovation might be a major a piece of individuals’ day by day lives, it’s appropriate and indispensable that kids discover how to utilize it at an early age. At the point when kids use innovation apparatuses in basic schools, a method of certainty and itness in their PC abilities will develop as they get more seasoned. Numerous youngsters today approach a great arrangement of innovation in their home; this entrance will end in understudies being agreeable by utilizing innovation at school likewise. When primary teachers use and model various sorts of advancements, they effectively lock in their understudies and make an intriguing workplace (Kenney, 67-75).

Results and Discussion:

During the Pandemic period, we have seen a drastic change in how studies are changing from the traditional educational method to digital learning. The pandemic has posed a big threat towards gatherings of any kind and as a result student can no longer attend schools. In the digital world, students willing to go extra miles can easily find resources online as opposed to physically going into the schools’ library and tracing piles of books for information. Furthermore, this will in return enable students to develop effective self-directed learning skills. Additionally, digital learning will sharpen students critical thinking thus enabling the student to effectively come up with decisions as opposed to just temporarily memorizing the textbook.

Digital educational games played by a group of students help them realize the importance of trusting one another and working together to achieve a common goal. This is because in the games they rely on each other’s’ trust in order to win. Digital learning also boosts students esteem due to their feeling of accomplishment from learning new sets of knowledge and skills giving then that desire and drive to find out even more.

In conclusion, technology not only features a positive impact on education but also poses a negative effect. Teachers and students should grab this amazing opportunity and utilize the good side of technology educationally and ignore the drawbacks in order to achieve academic excellence. It is thus wise of each and every country to introduce a more equipped digital educational system within the near future and migrate into the information period rather than staying in the industrialization period.
