The Western Hemisphere is a term describing half of the Earth lying on the west part of Prime Meridian (which crosses, UK, London and Greenwich) and east of Antimeridian while the other half is known as Eastern Hemisphere.

The Western Hemisphere is made up of the Americas, western parts of Africa and Europe, extreme Russia tip, numerous Oceania territories and portions of Antarctica but it excludes parts of Aleutian Islands found in the southwest of Alaskan mainland. In political rhetoric, Western Hemisphere is a term used to describe South and North America only (the New World) and all the adjacent islands.

Technically, though, the Western Hemisphere is inclusive of all the territories aforementioned. The population found in the Western Hemisphere geographical exceeds the 1 billion mark. Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the region standing at 1,960.8 metres (22,837 ft).

Due to the axial tilt of the Earth, in the Western Hemisphere, winter lasts from winter solstice (typically 21st Proofreading-EditingDecember) to vernal equinox (typically 20th March). Summer on the other hand lasts from summer solstice (typically 21st June) through to autumnal equinox (typically 22/23rd September).

There are some countries that fall in the Western Hemisphere but they are not part of the Americas and these include Algeria, Burkina Faso, Faroe Islands, Fiji, Cape Varde, American Samoa, France, French Polynesia, Morocco, Spain Senegal, New Zealand, Mauritania, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ireland, Iceland, Isle of Man etc.

Other countries fall in the Eastern and Western hemispheres along 180th meridian from north to south and these include the Russian Federation, United States of America, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Wallis and Futuna (France) and Fiji). Still, there are those countries that fall on both hemisphere on IERS Reference Meridian from north to south and they include the UK, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana.
