Why EBP is a Vital Component of The Practice of a BSN

Evidenced-Based Practice (EBP) is the conscientious, explicit, and judicial use of current best evidence in deciding the care of patients. This approach assist nurses to use knowledge in the provision of quality patient care as opposed to relying on outdated books, advice from workmates, myths or traditions. Additionally, it provides a critical strategy to ensure that care is updated and reflects the latest research evidence (Hrabe, 2017). EBP is important as it results in better patient outcomes. It promotes better patient outcomes because care is best provided with the presence of relevant evidence. EBP encourages an attitude of inquiry in health professionals as they cannot offer health services without seeking guidance from the evidence available (Hrabe, 2017). Moreover, the evidence-based practice also contributes to the science of nursing and increases confidence in decision making concerning funding health services. With EBP, health practitioners understand the best ways of utilizing resources.

To integrate EBP in my work environment, I will offer the essential infrastructure to help my staff develop EBP competencies and a professional environment. The move will result in a personal and professional growth of staff and the improvement of the quality of care. Several challenges bar the effective practice of EBP in the healthcare sector (Kuennen, 2015). Such obstacles include the lack of value for research in practice, difficulty in changing practice, inadequate time to conduct research, difficulty in accessing research papers and articles, feeling overwhelmed by the process, and lack of administrative support, knowledgeable mentors, skills about the research process, and awareness about evidence-based practice (Kuennen, 2015). I will use various approaches to overcome these barriers. These include using of journal clubs, research articles, and nursing grand rounds and integrating the material learned in this research into practice. Another method that I will use to integrate EBP in my practice will be by taking a crash course in EBP and also encourage colleagues to do the same. This will help in instilling the influence of EBP in the workplace.
